This was a special 928 sport wagon presented to Ferry Porsche for his 75th birthday on September 19th, 1984.

I snapped this photo in 1985 at the office parking lot at the Porsche factory.

1967 912 w/3.0 SC motor and tranny, RS door panels, stock body, power windows & brakes, and A/C.

I haven't actually seen the car. But for several weeks, I briefly had a press packet about it.

    Panamericana

    4WD + mostly plastic . . . something Lagaay and Bez cooked-up to try to fire-up the 911 blood-lines, I guess. Presented as a gift to Ferry Porsche . . .

Word was that he hated the thing

I am more restraint when it comes to design proposal commented by the public.
We all have our tastes but having received an insight in the car design process, its usually more than what it appears.

The Panamericana defined design elements for the upcoming 993 Coupe, 993 Targa, Boxster, 996 as well as was a style model for an unique 4WD 911 Coupe Concept. It was never meant to be sold to the public. Its Idea recently was re-used by VW-owned Lamborghini for a proposed 4WD Coupe. AMC once had a similar idea with its unique AMC Eagle SX/4 Liftback 4WD, it was on market by 1981: long before everybody.

You like it or not, but the Panamericana was crucial to modernise the 911 design lines when Porsche decided to abandon the 928/944 and re-focus on 911 design heritage.
All this was shown in 1989: 25 years ago. Now does its design look dated ? Absolutely not: It looks almost contemporary.
Its a fun car, Hot Rod style 911.

    Don't get me wrong, Karim . . .

    A 4WD off-road-capable sports car?

    I would love for Porsche --- or anyone . . . to build something like this! . . .

Quattro, Manx, Stinger, Stratos . . . rally cars by another name

    But --- design cues/influences notwithstanding . . . Ferry? . . . . . . . hated the Panamericana

Well Rick, the 1986 Porsche 959 is directly related to a Group 4 Rally Car and developed by the race/rally dept.
It was however too expensive and Porsche lost money on every one it sold. I believe the Panamericana was an idea to
populuar these ideas to a larger audience. Wideking however made the right business decision and went for the Cayenne road..

BACK to P family Porsche's, here is another car:

    Ferry Porsche owned.
One of the first built Porsche 911 Convertible, 1984, Chassis 91 ZES 150069, dark metallic green.
