So I ended up pulling the trigger on some Uniroyal tires from Tire Rack. 185/65/15 and H rated, at a whopping $59 each. I know that you can’t find much feedback on Uniroyals (some bad on old tires) and I might end up not loving them, but I can throw them on another set of 5.5”, keep my current (old) Michelins in the garage, and see how the Uniroyals do. Considering I don’t drive more than a few hundred miles a year, and rarely at speed... I figured It was ok to risk $245.

I hope I don't sound cheap,

I have the P6000 in 195/65 and --as far as I can tell with my limited experience-- they perform very well and have great grip. They're not cheap though. I don't particularly like how they look: they're a bit too modern on an early 911 for my taste. For my next set of tires I'm probably going for the CN36 in 185/70, primarily for the looks.
I just love having correct, quality vintage-looking tires on a classic car.

I just purchased a set of P6000 195/65 from Walmart of all places, they were/are $40 a tire "cheaper". Not a lot of options.

Spring and Luftgekuhl are coming, so I, too, pulled the trigger, on Fuzion Touring 225/60/15 for 8"s on RS flared rear and 205/65/15 for 7" fronts. They will be a big change from 225/50/15 and 205/50/15, but I do more Touring around than Tearing around. Not a huge investment in the big scheme of things, and easily remedied.

Boy, do I get that. Tires are -- to me -- just like any other visible part of the car, in that I want them to look period correct. I will eventually (once I have all the important stuff on my car dealt with) replace the Sumitomos with which it came with either XWX or CN36. Can't live with anachronistic tires long term.

EMPI dealers have exclusive access to the Yokohama GT Classic, available in 145/80R15 and 165/80R15, they are of radial construction, look period correct and will fit 911, 912, 914 up through 1976 where 15” wheels were fitted (except the Comfort and 914-6 that used 14”)
Particularly the early long hood cars used narrow tires 145 & 165 cross sections,
