Just read the write-up and obit. Thanks for posting. So many unsung heroes in popular music going back to the 60's. Guys like Hal Blaine who just passed away, were not entirely out of the spotlight as star studio musicians, but not quite household names. I can only think of a handful of sound engineers/producers who were pretty well known: George Martin, Phil Spector, Todd Rundgren (he probably would be much less known if not for being a successful recording artist himself), same with Jeff Lynn, and Brian Eno. And maybe Daniel Lanois.

Don't forget Brian Wilson he has a recording studio here in Oak Brook, IL also I would include Leon Russell and maybe Jim Peterik (Ides of March, Survivor) also local to Chicago.
