I purchased my 1970 911T in 1971 and I still own it today. Back in the day the car was equipped with an AM radio, and no air conditioning, so in the warmer months the windows were down, so the main source of audio was the music from the heart and soul of the beast. The music listed in this thread would be suited for the sterile cockpit of a modern day automobile. Today for me it is still better to have the windows down and listen to the heart beat of the car we love and enjoy driving.

    I know-I know --- but until David Bowie . . . this was my 1st 'alternative' artist

It's getting late have you seen my mates
Ma tell me when the boys get here
It's seven o'clock and I want to rock
Want to get a belly full of beer
My old man's drunker than a barrel full of monkeys
And my old lady she don't care
My sister looks cute in her braces and boots
A handful of grease in her hair

Oh, don't give us none of your aggravation
We had it with your discipline
Oh, Saturday night's alright for fighting
    Get a little action in
Get about as oiled as a diesel train
    Gonna set this dance alight
'Cause Saturday night's the night I like
Saturday night's alright alright alright, ooh

Well they're packed pretty tight in here tonight
I'm looking for a dolly who'll see me right
I may use a little muscle to get what I need

'Sides --- he pretty much took over the airwaves in the early '70s . . . same time when our cars were new

    Go figure

Wasn't it great when FM radio played entire sets of "new" music?

At precisely that last lyric (volume on 8), my world changed on a late November morning in 1973: a light rain, young mother in a Pontiac station wagon (with two kids watching wide eyed) tagged the right rear of my '67 BJ8 when changing lanes (going far faster than me) spinning me hard on the left side into a telephone pole. She sped away. The cops having breakfast at the Dunkin' Donuts directly across the street witnessed the entire event and rushed to help... they turned the radio off. Though conscious, it took two of them to pry me from the wreckage, pinned between the pole and transmission tunnel. I was lucky to escape with a heavy concussion, a dozen stitches to a bloody face and a torn right knee ligament.

Many years later as a small live music venue owner, I booked Graham Parker for a solo show. In 2002 I was introduced to him in NYC by another Americana favorite and friend Pat DiNizio of the Smithereens. Telling him the story, that just a few years later discovering Dave Edmonds & Rockpile had been a revelation in a time that disco was ascendant visibly moved him. That night in the club, playing my old Martin 0-18 acoustic he gave memories of that long-past traumatic event closure. Never would have met him if it weren't for Pat, RIP.
