    If you have a vacuum retard distributor remove and plug the line and take it for a ride. It may be sticking and not allowing advancement. you idle will come up so you'll have to turn in the air screws about 1/2 turn in.
    If it still backfires It may be too lean which also could cause backfires. Try 2 clicks rich on the main(remember rich is counterclockwise)
