Thread: Diameter of + Battery Cable?

    Diameter of + Battery Cable?

Does anybody know the diameter of the positive battery cable on a 1973.5 car?

I am looking for a precise fit for a solder on terminal, so I need to know the AWG on it.

Also, curious if I really do have a stock cable, so closeup photos are welcome...

    Thanks!

I am finding tables that will cross reference inches to AWG size. As far as I can tell, that is in between 1 and 0 gauge.

I was wondering what size it was. When I bought some took a sample with me and it matched up closest to 1 gauge. I'm using welding lead.

I believe all the wire on early Porsches is metric gauge (not AWG / Brown & Sharpe). Based on Ed's measurement, I bet it's actually 8mm.

Here is a chart I have bookmarked from wikipedia that may be helpful or at least interesting: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...auge_Chart.pdf

Also, AWG for multistrand wire is not really diameter based - it is driven by ampacity or the sum of the gauge of the individual strands. Therefore welding cable (which has a lot more strands for a given gauge) will have a different overall diameter than automotive wire.

If your goal is to match the ampacity of the original wire, I think you would be better off with 1/0 than 1 awg.

    Hope this helps.
