    Transmission parts

Which vendor has the best inventory of parts for my 901. Not sure what I'll need yet until we open it.

Bob, you can divide parts needs into new or used, as most vendors don't provide both.

Replacement items such as bearings, synchros, gasket sets are not hard to source, most well-known parts providers stock these. Original German parts are still available, although expensive. Some vendors are less candid about their parts, so I deal with those who provide more information- manufacturer, country of origin, etc.

Used parts such as gears, shafts, shift items are plentiful, and in some cases your only choice. Since condition of used parts is a primary concern, I'd avoid eBay and unknown forum advertisers. Deal with someone well-known and knowledgable about transmission parts.

If this transmission is from your '69 912, be aware there was a significant change during that model year, so you'll need to identify which version you have. Some parts differed between versions.

From the 911 Workshop Manual, page SR 139:

"Effective from 30 November, 1968, cars of types 912, 911T, 911E and 911S (not Sportomatics) are fitted as standard with a pressure cast gearbox housing."

"Introduction of this pressure cast gearbox housing, together with other modifications to the gearbox and transaxle, have lead to the establishment of new gearbox type numbers."

Early '69 transmissions had aluminum alloy housings; later '69 transmissions had magnesium alloy housings.
Some internal parts were changed as a consequence.

Bob, before you buy it might pay to google Joe Cogbill. Not everyone has had positive experiences with Cog's cogs.

California Motorsports is near my other home in Lake Havasu City, AZ. I hear that they are very reputable.

If you need any used parts, you may want to try a well established, Dismantler, experienced in the inner workings of Porsche transmissions.
