68 911s Targa finds a new home. Mine!

As I'm writing the ad to place on the site for Red, I get a text message about an "old neglected Porsche" sitting at a dealers lot. Been there awhile and I should check it out. When I got there, it was sitting outside, under an inch or so of snow. After haggling for a bit (I hate the BS, just tell me what you have in it & move on), I bought it on the spot.

Mentioning it to my friends later that night gave me the same reaction as it did to my significant other, starting with rolling of the eyes followed with "YOU did WHAT?!?!"

Here's what we know so far.
    1. Using the "but I'm a car dealer" doesn't wash.
    2. I get the evil eye & pursuing of the lips three days later.
    3. My NASCAR race truck is now for sale.

    4. It's a 1968 911 S Targa VIN: 11850027
    5. 15 x 5.5" Fuchs. Spare looks to be 4.5" width.
    6. Engine is numbers matching
    7. What looks to be triple webers
    8. Exhaust is fairly recent recent.
    9. New heat exchangers -both sides
    10. Webasto aux heater
    11. Fog lights
    12. Glass rear window - how does one know if it came with a soft window?
    13. The ugliest Kamei seats I've ever seen. Didn't even know they made seats.
    14. Complete owners manual & books showing original Cdn owner.
    In-service date: 19-08-67, plus a very cool palm sized softcover book covering Porsche Technical Spec's for 912 911 911T 911L 911S
    15. Vintage Messko red dot tire pressure gauge & leather pouch

I picked it up on a flatbed and was presently surprised it rolled after being outside for some time. Fully expected the calipers to be seized. My guess, it's been parked there at least a year. Brakes don't work, clutch works, but probably needs replacement.

I'll post some photos after I've had a chance to have a good look & pull the wheels.
With two 911 S-models, I'll need to sell one... But which one?

According to http://www.911specs.com/VIN60s911.htm, you have a 1967 model, not a 1968. The 1968 model vin began with a 119. Good find. I think that all the Targas in 1967 came with a soft window. There is a fellow in Canada who manufactures a kit for the replacement of the hardware for the early Targas. Restoration shops in the US use him. I'm in the same situation with a '67 S Targa. Looking forward to your pictures.

    Nope, not '67. That is a very early 68 chassis #... 118 (1968) 119 (1969) 9110* (1970) *Porsche added a number.

You may have an uber rare 68S targa WITH a glass rear window, it was an option...

I had a look at that website & I must admit, I was more than a little intrigued. I say this because the registration shows a 67 model year, however the rest of the documents that came with this car, along with the stampings on the car (minus the 1967 owner's manual) are definitely 1968.

I think there may be some issues with the data on this website... My car is definitely manufactured in 1966 yet the website shows it as a '65...

Here's some additional info on 0027: Originally Tangerine, it's now black. Looks like it has 6" fuchs, seatbelts, hard rear glass instead of the soft, foglights and the webasto heater. It's numbers matching engine to chassis, has koni's all the way around, front anti-sway bar... good floors and rockers. I've ordered a COA as well as PO history. Looks like it he took European delivery with Detroit as the point of entry. Name: 0027-01.JPG

No question about it being a 68 model year 911. Although it may well have been delivered very late in 67, Porsche has given it a 118##### chassis number, and the 'elephant hyde' vinyl is a 68 only year interior.

FWIW, you have a very rare car... Just over 400 cars were produced. The S targa was only only available in left hand drive and the ROW market (the US never got it). If it was delivered with the glass rear window, it's even rarer! It would also have been delivered with the one year only 5.5" fuchs. And if you're really lucky, that early chassis number would lead me to think you have one of the last aluminum engines before the switch to mag...
