    Restoration Question…1971 911T Targa

I have noticed that some 1971 911T Targas trunk area and engine bay are body color while others are semi gloss black like the under carriage and battery boxes.

    Which is correct?

    Thanks for the help!

I have original '71 Targa and front truck area is body color only, while the engine bay is body color with black sprayed over it like under carriage, so the body color is peeking through the black.

Do you mean black "Wurth" undercoating sprayed over the original color in the engine bay?

Color was always 'over' undercoat. Undercoat was put on over either bare steel or over primer over steel (some discussion on this, I have always found gray color when slowly sanding through undercoat) Then either black brushed on or color sprayed over undercoat depending on year.

Here are some pictures of mine, hope it helps. Front looks like what Ed describes as color over undercoating but engine area looks like top coat is black then body color then undercoating? See below:

Note that the undercoating only covers the lower areas of the trunk while the upper areas are painted with just a thin coat of color.

Here are some photos of the bottom of an original 70S that will help. 70/71 should be the same
