Thanks Bryce. I almost reached out to you, as the car was from Atlanta... was wondering if you had seen it. Either way, I flew in, talked to the shop, and drove it home. No problems the entire way.

514-9-3 beigegrau metallic Beige Grey Metallic
9112300820 is the third such car in 1972 with that paint code. Not sure why the CoA shows it as code 99 color to match. I would have thought code 98 if not under it's own code.

This is because paint code 514 was a paint-to-sample color that was actually a Mercedes Benz color, not a standard Porsche color. It was Mercedes color DB728.

Granted that it was a M-B color, but with 3 examples over 72 & 73 that I know of, there must be many more. Hence I suspect it was probably offered rather than customers asking the salesman for a specific M-B color. That is my understanding of the difference between 98 & 99. We really need to have sales literature showing the paint offerings for each year; and not just the usual color charts.

Dave, in 13 years of collecting, I never found “sales literature“ indicating paint to sample colors.
There were always two kind of, for each MY:

    Colour Chart
    Special Colours

If then someone ordered “paint to sample” (which could be ANY paint wanted), the pricelists always indicated the price.

As for the grey MB color 1972, imo it looks like its a color often seen on the fast 6.9SEL, fasted saloon in its time.

The paint sample colors in this color chart are not too far off compared to many I have seen. I saw this beautiful jade green 72S Targa on the street in Munich a few years ago. Looks pretty close to the paint sample...

Three types of color choices existed:

    Standard Colors
Special Colors (optional at additional costs)
Paint to Sample color ie any kind of color wish (optional at additional costs)

Above 72 Targa has most likely Special Color 8610, but not Paint to Sample.
