    Special Colors aka 'Paint-to-Sample' . . .

Cars nowadays seem to come in only a handful of colors . . .

    . . . black, white, silver, gray . . . w/ red for the 'sporty' types

    Don't know what it is --- lack of imagination? . . . fear of 'standing out' too much? . . . 're-sale' down-the-road?

Whatever it is --- bright, vivid, imaginative colors just don't seem to turn up any more . . . at least not in any of the roads that I drive or parking lots that I hang out in

Porsche has always offered custom paint on the 911. Still do --- as far as I know. Der Faktory would paint your car any color you wanted . . . all that you had to was provide a sample chip, pay a premium + non-refundable deposit . . . . then wait. I've heard that these cars could take as much as a year to be delivered . . .

    . . . oh-yeah --- but what did you get for your money? . . . . and your wait? . . .

    A genuine Faktory-custom/paint-to-sample vehicle . . .

. . . and some of Porsche's most striking cars

I think that buyers are the ones that fear standing out, so the colors aren't offered.

    [QUOTE=LongRanger;

    re-sale down-the-road?

    [/QUOTE]

Rick, you hit the nail on the head. Even as early as the mid 70s the majority of Porsches were "spec" cars ordered by the dealers and the options were heavily dependent on the resale when the car was traded back. (I would guess 90%+ were spec cars, I bet even more now) Every customer that I helped with an order got a color to match car.....I figured why not, if you were going to order a car anyway why have a standard color?

Back when I was in High School . . . I remember the very first time I saw a real Porsche Turbo Carrera

It was parked out back, behind Anaheim General Hospital --- MLK Med Cent, today? Anyway --- I was getting pulled-out of an Ambulance after a bike accident --- I got bounced-off of/flew across a Pinto while riding my bike . . . and I saw it as they wheeled me in

Thing was COPPER --- not gold, not metallic orange, nothing even-remotely pastel . . . shiney/newly-minted/like the biggest penny that I ever saw. And all that black trim --- window-surrounds, bumpers, tires, etc . . . made it stand-out even more --- like a space ship

Never seen anything like it --- before or since

    Whenever I see a Turbo Carrera . . . I think about that copper car . . .

What kind of an idiot would paint his car like that?

    I would
