    Rick,

Dark Metallic Red was an optional color from 66-69, so not paint to sample.

    Rick,

Porsche switched to a 3 digit color code format in 1972 so the old 9898 wouldn't fit the new system. They probably switched to 999 to denote paint to sample then.

    Hmmm

Well --- hopefully, someone w/ a post '72 'special paint' car will see this thread + post . . . tell us what info/numbers/tags they have

I've seen later SCs and Carreras advertised as 'paint-to-sample' . . . like that crazy metallic 'apple green' Coupe that was in the Griot's catalogs a few years back . . . so I know that they're out there

    Hey, Harvey . . .

What kinds of special colors did people pick? Brighter colors? Black? And how did you describe the color on the order to the factory? I've heard a story about a 'nail polish' sample, lipstick, etc. Did you do a color patch or plate for the customer to sign-off on?

And what kinds of cars got this treatment? Did people do this sort of thing mostly w/ high-end/'S' cars? Or would people get special paint on other cars --- 'T's & 'E's . . . just as much/less/more?

    Any particular customers/colors stand-out?

Paint code for the green SC is 280. The factory called it lime green when I asked its name. I believe it was possible as a VW color and thus didn't have a 999 code.
