Thread: Introduction and '73 revival project

  1. #11
So tis post is really just a bit of a catch up with some shots that seem to have gone AWOL in the earlier posts…. a bit of ugliness in the teardown, the rest of the sound system and a few of the new parts… Next post will be about some of the non-original aspects of the build and the thinking behind them.

Turbo lower valve covers are a bit of a no brainer really.

Early 'S' callipers need a rebuild but are perfectly period and more economical than '76 Turbo callipers that would have been needed for an RSR approach.

Mahle 2.7RS P&C set surprisingly affordable and an easy choice given a decision not to go crazy with twin plug heads etc.

Despite a generally disgusting interior, the rear sets were remarkably pristine - these are the original leather from 1973!

Period touches like this will be preserved in the rebuild as part of the car's history.

The tires might be 'Professor Ace' but the rims look like they were masked off by Helen Keller… all will be replaced by something quite special….

And more of it…doors were straight and clean apart from a couple parking lot dings….to my relief

OK, a bit less of the photos and more of the text for now.

I'd been keen to get back to early 911 ownership after 12 years' abstinence interrupted by these 2 (the shiny one itself a 4 year rebuild)…

Needless to say, I had a serious case of sticker shock when I started looking at options - budget is always a consideration but I was keen complete this project without having to sell the cabrio. This effectively meant that a genuine 'S' was off the table. Likewise, I didn't want to backdate - a great option but very hard to achieve the feel of an early car with a mid-year or later chassis - and I quickly discovered that over the last 10 years or so the 2.7 RS replica market was flooded with cars and little to tell frauds from faithful without a closer look. I also saw that the 'R Gruppe' thing was taking off and players such as Magnus Walker were now setting some expectations…well, I want a road car so an ST lookalike with 29mm torsion bars and open pipes was never going to happen either.

With a serious nostalgia for my old factory spec RS (see avatar), and an article in Excellence under the title 'Gold Standard', I quickly worked out that a fully RS specced 'S' look that would be a complete sleeper to all but the aficionado was the way for me. True to the heritage and built with best of breed updates that would not detract from the heart, spirit or aesthetic.

First practical step was to hit The Samba, Fleabay (including Germany), pistonheads and whatever other sale sites I could find. As with everything, ask the internet and you shall receive…and so it was that this T, a US spec MFI car was soon on a boat to New Zealand. While I was waiting, I spent a LOT of time surfing Pelican forums, these forums and a few other sources to see what the 'dope' setups were…from there, made a LOOOONG shopping list and proceeded to smash the credit card out of the park - including improving my German on the way!

So the end result of all that was many many courier packages to home, the body shop, and the engine builder's. The last of those are expected within a month or 2 - some things you just have to have made. Without detailing every single item - you really don't need to know about the late bolts and special washers for the 'S' cams! - the basics look a bit like this…

    Interior
Replica sport seats and rear seat covers from Stefan at GTS Classics in Austin Texas with grain matched leather panels
Perlon carpet for car and trunk in line with RST specifications - think 'Sport Purpose'
380mm 914 wheel to be double wrapped
300km/h speedo - rebuilt by PAS
    7300 redline tach - NOS
Hidden iPhone based sound system - it's not ALL 'sportlicht'!
    Wevo classic shifter (and coupling)
General replacement and refreshing of worn and missing parts

    Suspension
    1976 alloy rear trailing arms
New Bilstein front struts (19mm dropped spindles)
    'S' calipers
Tarret adjustable anti-sway bars with drop links - 19.3mm F&R
21mm front and 26mm rear hollow torsion bars from Glen Sander Engineering
Turbo tie rods with bump steer kit

    Cooling
3.2 Carrera fender oil cooler and fan
    Elephant Racing Oil lines
3.2 oil pump and bypass mod

    Engine
    Mahle 2.7RS P&C's
    'S' cams
Ported heads - 'S' spec with a couple of tricks
    Rebuilt '019' MFI pump
    Rebuilt 2.7RS throttle bodies
    NOS RS tapered injection stacks
Carrillo Rods (and trust me, these as well as the pistons needed balancing - all rotating assemblies are being dynamically balanced)
    Supertec head studs
    Case savers
    Shuffle sleeves
General replacement of all fasteners and wear parts such as bearings etc

Some of the engine work can be seen here…

The rods are in da house..

Case machined for 97mm. No boat tails - a decision made having regard to likely loads, ambient temperature operating range and the fragility of a non 7R mag case.

A little more of what's going on inside the engine and undercoat and colour blocking before taking an update break over Christmas..

Heads ported to 'S' spec plus a couple of tricks. Note the current philosophy of rough tracts and also leaving the guides at original length but profiling them

Pistons here being checked for valve clearance - and passing with flying colours… ONE of the moments an engine builder hopes for on every job

Nicely cleaned up case with new hardware…great to keep the car matching numbers (well, apart from the trans, but that can go into storage)

After the etch primer comes the high build and colour blocking… another pass grade (Can I get a bumper sticker, "My 911 is a body shop honor student"?)

And not to forget making the engine bay tidy...tinware gets powdercoated - not original but better....Porsche would have done it.

Because we all like shiny things for Christmas…

Here's a once undercoated guard now shiny next to an untouched and original battery box…

And lat but not least, a Christmas present yet to be opened… but trust me, when you live in New Zealand and you get a photo like this with the notation that 'Harvey has finished his work and sent these to the shipper', your Porsche Christmas is complete
