Thanks for the pics, who makes the nice stainless system in the first photo, rothsport,i cant see anything on there web site, any idea on cost and noise level.also looks like varying diameter headers which is good, can straight through pipes also be fitted to this.
The second one looks a quite system with phase 9 type pre silencers.i found the phase 9 killed about 30. Bhp.
    Thanks for your help

Noise level on Rothsport system was up from the Quite Ex. We must run mufflers in Portland regardless of noise, so no one runs open exhaust. You will never make noise a Laguna without mufflers. My power was fine with Quite Ex, rear crossover chamber makes a big difference. Rothsport uses a banding clamp for muffler attachment, so anything could be installed behind it. Gled

    Second Gear!…..

I guess some things you appreciate more when looking back and reflecting….

…..that's certainly true of the first gearbox I had rebuilt for my 2.4E project.

In the UK Mike Bainbridge at MB Porsche Engineering… http://www.mbporsche-engineering.co.uk/ ..is highly regarded as being amongst the very best when it comes to gearbox work…..equally as good, he doesn't apply the 'Porsche premium tax' often encountered elsewhere!

I knew I had a great deal last time around, a fantastic gearbox rebuild whilst supplying and fitting a ZF LSD……looking back I now appreciate I paid peanuts!

Alas not so lucky this time around…...not that Mike's philosophy has changed, his labour rate is still as keen as ever however this gearbox required a few upgrades and a little more work. At least having to replace a couple of gear sets helped justify going for custom ratios….not that I needed much persuasion!

The package I sent up to Mike today included my machined end case with pump pushes pressed and RS oil pump gears honed, these work in conjunction with the oil spray bar and aid cooling…..the middle set of gears from Guard Transmissions and a Wevo transmission side cover and bearing retainer plate. The Wevo products are really post-78 cheats however the side cover is stronger and accepts the larger 930 bearing whilst the teddy bear is a sensible upgrade….not quite period mods but then they could have been done 'in the day' so that'll work for me…….

…so, with my gearbox build all in hand, engine build to commence shortly, Harvey having confirmed the wheels as nearly done, a couple of specialist parts in the process of being fabricated, assembly scheduled for December and final paint about to start…it looks like the next few months could be a lot of fun!

I'll hold back now on the boring posts until I have something more interesting to share and I can splash a little blood!…….

    ……orange that is!

    Cheers,

    Wrong, Wrong, Wrong!…….

I've had comments that this build is all over the place!…..

A 2.5 litre motor doesn't really belong in a narrow bodied car!……..that interior rear shelf to accommodate twin harnesses is a mess!….....chopped up doors!……..SC oil coolers!…..turbo brakes!!!! ……

    …..and what about those wheels!

Well, it's true that deep 6's and 7R's don't really belong on a 72 shell and I guess the RSR finish is a little unconventional……but what the heck, this is a Mongrel!

When I first approached Harvey Weidman and asked if he could help with a set of wheels for my project to be ready for CLM 2014, he was thankful that my 12 month timescale was a little more realistic than the usual 'next week' request!

Well, we're approaching a fair bit longer than that!…..but then I'm sure Harvey was keeping a watchful eye, he knew I was far from ready and certain he wouldn't have let me down…..

….and at the end of the day, it looks like the wait is going to be worth every single second! ……

    …fronts ready for paint…

…and, like factory, Harvey suggested detailing the rears as well (one of those 'I know it's there' details!)….

….rears transformed to 7R to accommodate some wide rubber….

…...I'm told the finish of Mr W's wheels is second to none…

….now, as I said, some might think that deep 6's and 7R's on a 72, let alone with an RSR finish, is just plain wrong!……. and they'd certainly have a point….

…….but at the end of the day, at least this car will have heart(s)! ...…

    Cheers,

As someone who drives a narrow '69 with a 3.0L, SC front cooler, early Turbo brakes, 5pt harnesses, deep 6's and (soon) 7Rs from Harvey, I can appreciate the choices you've made - functional tech upgrades that improve the driver's safety and experience, but sticking within a certain classic look and feel. Bravo to all you've done thus far, it's really coming together!
