    Hi Xavier,

Yes Chris helped with a few ideas, he's a great guy and very talented. His own 912 Outlaw project is pretty cool - http://www.ddk-online.com/phpBB2/vie...p?f=28&t=19200

    Cheers,

Cheers, I appreciate the encouragement and thanks also Maurizio

This one is going to be quite different to the 2.4E….the plan is to have it ready for CLM 2014 and take both cars……well, that's the plan!

    Cheers,

Bummer, as I went to the newsstand yesterday to see if new Classic Porsche was out, but wasn't yet. Will read about your car when I can get it.

    Barry Carter

When I started my first 911 restoration the plan was to keep the restoration of the shell in-house. We have a small commercial bodyshop and have carried out a number of minor restorations on various makes for fun.....metal is metal, right? So how difficult could an early 911 be?
I then started to educate myself on these early cars, mostly here and on DDK, and the realization of what I was about to take on quickly sank in! ......the quality of work being carried out was to a different level and attention to detail was simply staggering.
I decided that I would be putting my guys under too much pressure to tackle this work ourselves, no disrespect to them but commercial repairs are a different world to specialist restoration work....I needed a specialist who had the correct tools and jig and most importantly knowledge to take on my restoration, someone with the integrity to reach the highest standards as well as the in-depth knowledge and experience to get it just right.....I then found Barry Carter.

Barry Carter is one of 3 or 4 experts in the UK who truly know how to rebuild an early 911. The quality of his work is second to none, the integrity of his craftsmanship simply staggering and the level of detail at another level....when it comes to back-dating later sills he doesn't just take away the side pressings, he also likes to backdate the drain holes too .......

Now Barry is his own person, a one-man band who works by himself and has fully rebuilt dozens of 911 shells, you'll see the name 'Barry' constantly on the DDK restoration threads against some amazing restorations. He's well known to the UK early 911 crowd although he never promotes himself, shuns requests for magazine articles and likes to slip under the radar.....with a two year order bank he can only do so much. Many on here will remember the 2.2S (affectionately known as Swampy) restoration by Alan UK of Canford Classics which was rescued from a burn out garage and quite literally rebuilt by Barry from the ground up.

Barry did an outstanding job on the restoration of my 2.4E and since then I've been fortunate to have painted two more of his 911 rebuilds.....the biggest compliment I can pay him is by saying that he holds God-like status with the guys in our bodyshop, seasoned professionals who know true craftsmanship when they see it.

Needless to say that when it came to the rebuild of this Mongrel, there was only one person who I'd ever turn to.....

The Shell - Part One…..not so lucky this time!

We knew from the outset that this shell would need a full restoration, all the usual areas….or so we thought!….

….the car had received new front wings, sill and rear quarters a few years before being taken off the road in 1889….

….although this work wasn't done to a particularly high standard!

…further investigation revealed that the car had suffered trauma to the near side front and would probably require a new inner front wing…

…fully stripped, it was time for media blasting…

…not too pretty when fully stripped…

You could say that Paul…..and sometimes you have to polish that diamond real hard!

…once on the jig we learnt the shell wasn't quite straight! …..in fact the front nose was pushed a good ¾" to right….

…and before any new metal was grafted in things needed to be tugged straight!….

By now we'd decided to replace the NS inner front wing, front pan, slam panel, new inner and outer sills….the OS inner front wing was really quite bad so that was being replaced as well…large parts of the floor, umpteen repair sections….oh, and we had to get rid of that sunroof too!….

…unfortunately certain panels like the NS inner rear wing are currently NLA…
