Slate Gray paint codes throughout the years?

I've searched the forum, Derwhites and CPR's paint code information and still have a few questions I hope the paint experts can answer.

Here's what I found for SLATE GRAY:
    '60 & 61 356 color code is #6001
    '62 & 63 356 color code is #6201
    '64 & 65 356 color code is #6401

    '64 & 65 911 color code is #6401
    '66 & 67 911 color code is #6601
    '68 & 69 911 color code is #6801

The obvious pattern here is the second digit of the code corresponds to the production year.

The question is - is this the exact same color "formulation" throughout the years, or does the color differ slightly at any time?

Also, Steve McQueens 1970 Gray 911S must have been special order since the color isn't offered on the '70 chart.
Is there any evidence as to exactly what "color" that was painted?

    Thanks

My guess is that they are the same. If you are trying to get a good match, I suggest you go with Standox single stage if you can still get it. While researching this for my 65 911 I was given a very good recommendation by someone in England thru this site (sorry, can't find the search and don't recall his name) that turned out to be excellent. This is a complex color to get right and true to original.

According to Porsche in 1970 all Slate Grey codes 1960-1969 are the same base color code 615. So yes, the same formulation. Remember, these were painted in batches and naturally there is a 'range' (some lighter or some darker) of any color that was tolerated.

I had no luck with my PPG paint dealer in providing him with any of the above paint codes...meaning the various 3 or 4 digit codes beginning with the number 6. Does anyone have a PPG or DUPONT code for slate gray? Thank you.

IMHO the most attractive color applied to any automobile body, regardless of manufacturer. Witness this recreation of the 1955 Mille Miglia car driven by John Fitch. M-B called it Graphitgrau and gave it the code DB 190.

As I said in an earlier post, this is a very difficult color to get right. The Dupont mix I got back looked like mud. Try Standox single stage

Thank you both for your responses. I am probably needlessly agonizing over an exact match (whatever that is), as this is the color I've chosen to do my ST outlaw/hot rod build and it will not be the original color of the car anyway. I have a 50th Anniversary 991 in my garage (Graphite Gray) which is a 'slate gray', and heck, I might just shoot it that color and call it a day. It (the 50th) gets lots of very favorable comments on its color.
