You are wonderfully relentless Rick! Cool image. It just didn't take much real estate to sell Porsches or Volkswagens in those days!

Looks like I am in the "VW Pacific, Culver City, Calif." category.

As I said, Fascinating!!! And the depth guys like you go to, awesome!!!!!!!

So, Rick , et al. - if you lived in Del Mar and were a regular at the Porsche Dealership through the sixties & seventies, what dealer might that likely be?

Now I'm hitting close to home - uh yer home, not mine - I live way out here in the sticks

    Hey, Mike . . .

Del Mar = San Diego area. I only track dealers from '68 on --- so I don't have a definitive/complete listing, but . . . there are two outfits that come to mind almost immediately

    San Diego Motor Imports, Inc
    1954 Kettner Blvd
    San Diego

    Truman Motors
    464 West Main Street
    El Cajon

Of the two, Truman is the larger/older/more-established

Two other possibilities would be . . .

    Bill Yates, Inc
    32852 Valle Road
    San Juan Capistrano

. . . just because they're the first dealership up from San Diego

    Chick Iverson
    Newport @22nd Street
    Newport Beach

    . . . a Big-time dealer who would have a car if the other dealerships didn't

Thank you Rick! I might nail this down... Have already spoken with the widow of one son of the first owner (k doc arrived only today). She went on a date in the (my) green car before marrying...

Your list gives me talking points when I get connected to her brother in law My fingers are crossed! She thanked me for calling too...

    Regards -

    My pleasure, Mike . . .

I love the Story part of people's cars. And the searching. I don't think many other groups have the kind of passion for finding out about their cars' pasts like Porsche people have. And your conversations w/ past owners + their families should be pretty interesting, too --- people may not have talked about some of this stuff in decades, so . . . no telling what may come up. Who knows? . . . there may be pictures or documents or tools or other contacts that can come up, too

Anyway . . . good luck w/ your search. I always get excited when I read about someone finding stuff out --- thanks for sharing!

PS Hey -- you just might make some new friends, too!

Actually mine (11835284) was picked up on the 28th of May 1968 (made in March 68) from VW Pacific Culver City Ca. by a gentleman (name withheld) from Pocade Canyon Lane, LA.

Before the P/A organizing the distribution of Porsches, ALL of the VW dealerships in SoCal that I knew of could sell Porsches. Just many chose not to. We ordered Porsche parts from any VW dealership because the parts came from the same distributorship. In the late 60s I would go down to the local VW dealer and get his parts book out from under the counter then look up the numbers and give them to the parts clerk to order.
Same thing with ordering a car. If you really wanted one from your local VW dealer he could order it....
All of that changed when the P/A system came about. They wanted all of the dealers to be exclusively P/A and have VW in a separate location....most complied but a few like Chick Iverson were reluctant.
That is the reason for the big shake up in the names and addresses when the P/A system of distribution took over. There is the "Before" list and the "After" list with the survivors.....and brand new points like ours...Sierra P/A in Riverside taking the point that would have been Econo Motors VW. (they continued to sell VWs)
And the distributor did have a service dept but not a sales dept as far as I remember (for non competing with sales).

    Hello,

have been digesting the information overflow (thanks for that) of this thread I have a '69T and the Kardex shows 422 as "händler-nr", VW Pacific as "händler" and the "rechnungs-dat" is Jan 31st 1969..

If I understood correctly there is no way of knowing (based on Kardex code 422) which dealership actually delivered the car? Original owner had an address in Hacienda Heights, CA.

I was hoping to start hunting for license plate frames..

    regards, Tero
