It is my understanding that the first 12 RHD that came in to the UK (as two batches of six via AFN) were completed in the competition department as the RHD production line was not set up. 300474 was the development mule and changes were made as and when ideas developed the RHD format. What details are original and what are subsequent changes on that particular car are very difficult to determine.
Yes, wipers always on the passenger side to start with.
It is so easy to change them from one side to the other, just turn the crank 180 degrees on it's spline. Many owners have done that and the competition cars had it that way for quick screen clearance. You need to change one of the wiper arms or else it looks wrong.
I notice that 300882 is fitted with a LHD wiper motor.

    Great pic, very nice!!
It already struck me that the air vent in the wiper board was black on yr car, but maybe that was done together with the small alterations you mentioned earlier to make the car look more modern back then?

As for the rest, the more I learn about early RHD cars the more I'm convinced that the early conversions were quite haphazard things and were exactly that - factory conversion and if the customer has tight time restrictions then consistency wasn't there yet. My clock is also on the left of the instrument binacle where it should be on the right, it's almost as they just took the wiring and looked how far is it going to stretch.
Further to the input from Jim with the nice pictures added, the steering wheel changed in the summer of 1965 for the reasons mentioned. The alu wheel weighs only 900 grams, but indeed, even when you hold the wheel with yr right hand (LHD cars) when you get out of the car - as many people do-, you run the risk of cracking the wood lose from the alu ......

Arthur Hamilton who bought the car in '66 after it arrived in Australia was persuaded by his son Ian (third owner subsequently) to constantly update the car for it to look more "modern" Here it is in 1973 on his daughters wedding day disguised as 911S (lid) in a company of a real 69S still sporting a deep rear grill however. It eventually ended up with fuchs and all blacked out chrome and a later deluxe interior until it was taken back to what it is now in 2002. It's likely that the LHD wiper motor may have come from a 66S that donated bits to it during retrofit back to what it should be. Name: Ollie's wedding.jpeg

I don't want to erase history as its Australian presence is so well known and prominent in the club there but I will slowly bring it back up to '65 spec as it should be. It's a minor miracle that original engine and gearbox survived with the car.

Most likely changed, however does the grill bit behind the vent frame supposed to be silver as well? Originality book says so however I have only seen restored car with fully anodised silver grill? Does anyone have a period picture or a film shot with a silver air vent?

The 911/50 anniversary edition book shows photos of an early 911, slate gray over red. The garnish rails in that cars are also red. I believe door hand rails/arm rests were mixed, sometimes in black and sometimes interior color (red, fawn, etc.), but thought garnish rails in early cars were always black. I know there are a few other things wrong with this (museum?) car (US signal lenses with Euro gauges) but wanted to document if any cars came from the factory with garnish rails in colors other than black.

I haven't seen the The 911/50 anniversary edition book but my understanding has always been that the garnish rails and armrests were black with the lighter interiors.

The book Original Porsche 911 by Peter Morgan (1995) has these photos of a right-hand-drive 1965 Porsche 911 in slate grey with a red interior:

An early Porsche of America brochure has black and white photos of a '64 or '65 911 with a light (possibly beige) interior:

I took these photos of a 1968 Porsche 912 Targa back in 2003:

Note that the '68 has red armrests. Porsche changed the door cards and pockets for '68 and might well have changed the color scheme. These photos were taken in Lake Arrowhead, California; last I heard this 912 was in The Netherlands.

    The usual caveats apply:
    • I don't know whether any of these cars were incorrectly restored,
    • Nobody can prove that Porsche didn't do something different one time only.

That happened to my car. The dealer who was Bob Smith owned the car and did updates like the steering wheel because of vibrations. When I asked him about it, that's what he said.
