Thread: what is the biggest one that got away

  1. #101
    906. My brother bought one to avoid corrosion issues of a 911 & thought it a good choice for a commuter car. He was wanting to sell @ 45K in 1980 & I was fledgling ME with 67 911S & wanted to buy it. He wanted cash deal...couldn't swing it. Still regret it.

Quite a rush to drive it; I thought it to be quite the right vehicle for commuting also.

He sold it & bought investment property in Allen, TX & made a bit of dough but without the passion.

    Got away

Not the biggest one, but it still shocks me that I did not make this deal happen. Blue is a complete car - 1967. Red is a 68 but without a motor. Also part of the deal was the MFI motor in front of the blue car. All for $5500.

in 1987 - I was in LA for a week. Looked at a 550 spyder for $18K. Just couldn't swing it at that time. So 2 years later I buy a 76 930 for $24K. (WTF was I thinking?) Even worse - I sold the 930 about 10 years ago for $22K. Again - WTF was I thinking?

In 2007 a pair of matching number 73 RS cars fresh off a boat from Japan one Bahia Red with black script and one White with red script for $300k, needed some resto work but were complete.

A few years later, Steve McQueens 1970 911S movie car for $275k, I personally knew the owner at the time and could have had it before it was advertised anywhere, the price was quite high at the time but knew it would be worth much more. I had a business partner who had the money, explained it to him and he said "I don't see it" so he ended up buying 8 or so 80s 911SCs and Carreras for an "investment", we split up our partnership.

3 cars. 2 that I let go. A 59A Super with Rudge wheels for $2500.00 and a 914-6 I sold for $8000.00. The big one for me was a 550 Carrera for $25000.00. It seemed like all the money in the world after selling my 59A for $2500.00. This is me with the A coupe in Aspen in the mid 70's.

    Forgot all about this thread.

I was referring to selling my 300011 901.

I bought the car in 1988 for a song. (It was titled and being advertised as a derelict '67 911.) Being an opportunistic and idiotic twenty-something year old I sold it not long after and regretted it from the moment I said "It's a Deal" to a digger acting on behalf of Barnaby Brokaw. (I will NEVER forget that day. Deal was consummated at the counter of Hobo Joe's at 16th St/Camelback in Phoenix. I was seated at the end of the counter. Guy to my left was smoking and had very little hair on top of his head.)

Over a decade later I followed up with Barnaby to see if he would sell the car back to me. He said "Wish I could Frank but the car was stolen in 1995".

Fast forward to January 2014. I received a very strange email from some cat in Monaco (Some of you know him.) asking if I still owned 011 (My name still showed on the '64 Registry as owning it.) I asked why he wanted to know. He said "I now own it; at least pieces of it, including the VIN stamp." I was ready to go have a look but through the efforts of Erik K. quickly flushed out that he bought fraudulent docs and worthless sheet metal bits. However that got the wheels turning and I hatched a plan surmising the web may hold the key to solving the mystery.

I paid Barnaby a visit and over a 2 day period convinced him to sell back the title and rights to the car. It took a lump sum (Absolutely KA-RAZZY money compared to what I sold it for!) and a generous equity stake in the event the car was ever recovered. This was nothing more than a proverbial roll of the dice based solely on my intuition and God's mercy. What was most unbelievable is that my fantastic wife signed off on this ridiculous idea!

15 months after that the rest is Porsche history.

My wife and I truly do thank God that we got "a second bite of the apple".

In 1999, I have bought a 1989 928 S4 Club-Sport, more than one and a half year after the first time I saw it on a add.
This was wp0zzz92zks840188, the second of the seven 1989 928S4 CS produced.
I didn't know how many were made but was sure that it was really rare!
I have discovered the actual production number a few years after.
My ex-wife has bought it during our divorce, in 2013.

Last year, I have found and bought wp0zzz92zjs845063, the fourth of the the twelve 1988 928 S4 Club-Sport.
This time,I perfectly knew how rare and special it was.
In fact, the owner didn't. So I have had an incredible opportunity.

Three years ago, I haven't bought a 1987 928 S4 Club-Sport prototype. It needed too much work. But now, I help the current owner to restore it.

Man, some of these cars you old farts have passed on makes me feel much better about those where I've done the same (964 RS, 964 RS 3,8, 1972 911S)

But at the same time I get the sneaking suspicion I'll be in a similar situation 30 years from now due to cars I'm "blind" to today
