Thread: 'Versuch' Cars

  1. #31
How did you guys get to linking Versuch cars with racing or factory cars in particular? (I seem to have missed this?)

If we look at the German meaning 'Versuch' is a request or a wish, something special was requested when producing the car or delivering the car? Special color, options, delivery at the factory,...? I believe you can or could request a lot of things.

edit: "ich versuche deutsch zu lernen" -> i wish to learn to speak German

I think because some of these cars were given to racing/rally drivers as back door payments. This was certainly the case with the E I discovered. At the time there was a maximum of £50 cash allowed across the UK border to and from mainland Europe but you could quite legally drive your factory versuch ‘gift’ back to the UK and then sell it.

Absolutely correct, but some misconceptions die hard and are perpetuated to add a racing aura to otherwise normal vehicles that were produced for a specific demand. See post #24, supra.

Not racing cars. Racing drivers --- Oliver, Ahrens, et al . . . seem to've gotten these

Not sure if any of these vehicles were 'requested,' per se. Some seem to be cars that were either re-purposed and/or discounted at some point ---'special' more for the way they're delivered than their spec

    Uuuuh --- no

    Wünschen vs versuchen . . . different. Recall Porsche's own Sonderwünsch Program . . . = very different

Don't think that 'factory delivery' is that unusual; lotsa people still pick their cars up there. Now, 'factory use' (aka 'händler 100') is something different --- but also problematic . . .

A handful of vehicles seem to be BOTH . . . and not sure why

    Yup . . .

. . . and apparently, 'WE' is the earlier designation for 'factory use'?

Anyway, here are vehicles that I can recall that have records that show both . . .
    ..1) VIN = 500006 --- '66 Targa
    . . . see next post . . .

    ..2) VIN = 119300950 --- '69 coupe, ex-Kurt Ahrens

    ..3) VIN = 9110301059 --- '70 Coupe, ex-Jo Siffert
    See post #3 . . .

    davep may know of others?

Strange, huh? You'd think that one would require the other, but --- at least from the cars that've shown-up here, so far . . . not the case

There are several "Siegfried Zelger" located in or nearby Munich. The address "Grünwalderstr.108" is a gas station today. I would assume that it was a gas station in the sixties & seventies too. What I have found is an obituary, which would fit - see attachment.
