    901 short shift kit

    I recently asked if anyone was going to make american racing wheels for our vintage 911s and Harvey responded that this was in the works. Emboldened by this recent success how about someone making factory style short shift kits for the 901/902 transmissions? Please.

    There was no factory short shift kit for the 901 gearbox...just crappy aftermarket synchro crushers.

    The factory short shift was a 915 thing. I actually liked the Weltmeister that was on my race car, that and a WEVO coupler made the shifting unambiguous. Both are available.

    Yale you could always convert to a 915 shifter with the factory style kit.

    We may be in the minority but I agree with 304065. I have a Wevo coupler, tranny and engine mounts, and the aftermarket Short Shift Kit. In my opinion the problem with the aftermarket SS kit is that it uses a later, shorter shift arm (964?) as well as raising the pivot point. The combination of these two factors is what reduces the shift distance so substantially. To me it was not about having the shortest throws (which increase effort dramatically too), but the most precision.

    What I chose to do was extend the shift arm back up to the standard length which takes a LOT of effort back out of the shifter. This returns the level of effort almost completely back to normal while the raised pivot point still shortens the throws and increases precision several fold. With the proper fine tuning my 901 shifts with the precision of a Winchester Bolt Action which is a feeling I can attest is lacking in almost 100% of the other 901s I have ever driven.

    I should add that all new bushings and a replacement shift guide plate were also part of the rebuild. Take slop out anywhere you can. There aren't that many places in the system for it to develop, so getting it out just takes time and a little patience.

    Yes. A 915 shifter is a direct bolt-in to control a 901 gearbox. Allows a choice of short shifters as well. Using our shift attachment (Gate Shift kit), there's a spring-loaded path from 1st to 2nd (the 915 reverse pawl lever is removed when used with a 901).

    To restore the factory shifting effort with short shifters, add an extension onto the shift lever. We have 3" extensions for this purpose.

    We also have a 5.5" lever extension for those using the Weltmeister short shifter (shifts like a factory shifter).

    I have driven Reza's 901 with the factory 901 short shift kit and loved it. I don't want to have anything that protrudes elephantinely from the floor nor do I want an aftermarket kinda sorta thing, I would like the hens teeth brand factory item or one exactly like it made by an anal retentive vintage porsche parts making yodaesque figure who cares more then would be considered normal in this 21st century. You know who you are.

    I am at times incredibly dense and just saw this note. Reza told me that you guys put a super rare factory short shift kit in his light green swb with the 1970S engine in it. Others here have commented on how rare this piece was, but above you say it doesn't exist, that would indeed make it rare.

    And I have heard others say the same thing and also that only the factory short shifter is a appropriate approach. Since I know the factory short shift kit for the 915 is easily available, what are people going on about?
