I use an old 1 1/2" wide paint scraper that I bought at a garage sale for 25¢. I like the old ones because they are a bit thicker and stiffer than the ones they sell now, they also have better handles. I ground the corners off and put a soft edge on it - not too sharp or it will dig in. Also why I take the corners off, otherwise they can gouge the metal when it slips. There were places where the undercoating was ready to come off and others where it wanted to stay put. For the places with good adhesion I used my heat gun to warm it slightly - not too much or it turns into a gooey mess. Makes it much easier for the scraper to lift it. After I finished scraping I went over it with a soft pad on my angle grinder to get all the loose bits.

NOT a fun job, but necessary.

Thanks, I do like the orange on the 901 body, particularly the Targas. I've had Orange 356's and I wasn't too keen on it.

Larry, I may be jumping ahead here but now that you have the underside looking clean enough to eat off, do you know yet what you are going to cover it with to preserve it and prevent future rusting?

I will put on a good primer and then a light undercoat. I don't like it too heavy - looks like you're trying to hide something. Probably because of all of the nasty things I've found under heavy undercoat in the past. :-)

I have a 356B Cabriolet with perfect, original pans and we put a light undercoat on it too. When they are in that nice of shape they are a joy to behold. Picture below(undercoat went on a little thicker than I like, but not as heavy as it looks in the picture):Name: DSCN2819.jpg

We will do the same thing with my 356C Sunroof (but it has new pans):Name: 1976 -sunroof porsche 065.jpg

    Larry,
As a reference, in post 21 of this thread you can see a nice view of the texture of the SWB undercoat (schutz).

I sold this special car just before Christmas. I enjoyed every minute of the almost three years that I owned it. The buyer is a good friend of the original owner who lives in the same small town in Bavaria where this car started it's life 50 years ago. I'm happy that the car is now back "home" after all these decades.
Luckily, I still have my 356B Cabriolet to drive to Cars and Coffee. Certainly not the same adrenaline rush as the S, but it gets me there.
