Barn find of possible early 901 engine and trans but the area where the engine number is doesn't seem to give much information. If anyone can tell me what kind of engine I have and a ballpark of value that would be helpful thanks!

That engine belongs to a 1965 model year 911 with a VIN with approx +/- 301800 produced in late June 65 or early July 65. Dave any comments?

1971 911 2.2T Coupe Tangerine
2005 997 C2S Coupe special 1965 slate grey
1978 911 3.0 SC Targa Silver w/chrome trim
For reference, case number 901896.
It is the first 911 variant engine type 901/01 with 1991 displacement for model year 1965. That said, the fan cowling is red, so someone has been at it over the last 50 years; possibly more than once. Essentially what it is would be a core engine that may be rebuilt. What is inside will only be known once it is apart, and even then it looks rather tired.
For reference 901897 was installed in 301784, so it was likely installed in a car with VIN +/-25 from that datum.

What is the car/chassis it's in? It isn't a 911...

Restoration Saga
The original car is likely gone from this earth. It was removed from the car in the the late 70's or early 80's because the car had been hit in the front.
Wouldn't an engine produced this late in '65 have been in a '66 model year car? The book I have is confusing to read. Not sure if it's because the German model years and the American model years were different. How many 1965 911's were produced. My book seems to indicate only 235, with engine numbers through 900360. Then starting again for the '66 model year at chassis #300236 and engine #900361. Please advise.
Whoa! That is so scary wrong. Read this:

Looking carefully at the picture I see the tandum fuel pump for the solex carbs. Can't see the center lube cam line though. Red cover is confusing. Hard to imagine changing much inside and leaving the troublesome solex and pumps intact.
