    2.2E Cam Timing problems

Hi guys, I have a 2.2E 1971 and have done a full rebuild i was about to set the cam timing/overlap. Having looked at the numbers on my cams I have noticed that the original cams that were previously fitted we're not E cams. The left cam is 901 105 183 0R (01) stamp, the right is a 901 105 110 01 (s) stamp. I believe that the left is a 1972/3 and the right is a scolex 1968 (possible blank). Am I correct in saying that these are NOT a matching pair? , the left has an overlap of 5.2mm and the right should be 4.3mm according to Wayne's tech section. I don't know how to find out if they have been reground before without taking them out so do I set them to the different overlap specs on the dial gauge as they read eg- left at 5.2, right at 4.3, or can I some how work out what the lift of the cams are whilst still in the engine. I'm running standard pistons/valves etc. I did previously set both to 5.2 but the valve to piston clearance on the right side no4 exhaust is very close and I don't want to bounce valves. Any info on this would be much appreciated and the wife is really starting to complain about the engine in the bedroom.!!!!

If you have two different cams no matter how you juggle the timing it ain't gonna work! Often regrinders stamp the specs on the back of the cam,,,which of course you can't see now. The only way to really find what you have is by attaching a degree wheel on the crank pulley and then checking opening and closing specs. Which will be a bit of a juggling act since you now don't know what they are even supposed to be!

Set the overlap to S spec and check clearances. If there is an S stamped on the end of the right cam it is probably an S cam as is the left one. Also check lifts and chart them at as many intervals as you feel comfortable with if you have a dial indicator. The casting numbers vary due to blank availability I presume.

I have checked the clearances but am a little unsure as to what is " acceptable" when it comes to them. In Wayne's book it mentions that you can save time by setting the rockers to 2mm down from spec clearance, but when I do this I get conflicting measurements. Left cam seems good where as right cam is close to 2mm, is this enough or not. At 5.25mm overlap it's a high lift cam so I'm expecting the clearance to be tight.
