What's the correct finish for the '67-'68 shifter assembly?

    Friends,

I'm also restoring my shifter assembly and in order to keep the advice/recommendations separate, I decided to use different threads. I hope that's okay.

So, what is the correct amount of gloss for the shifter base? (I was told that the levels of gloss are: gloss, semi-gloss, satin, matte, and flat. I'm pretty sure it's either gloss or semi-gloss, but if I'm wrong, let me know.)

Also, does anyone have a recommendation as to the best material? I'm pretty sure that the original finish was simply painted. Are there any recommendations regarding the best paint to use for the shifter base?

    Thank you all.

Somewhere between gloss and semi-gloss is my best estimate. Yes, they were just painted and a bit haphazard, too boot.

    The paint terms are subjective...
Satin is the closest (between gloss and semi-gloss) and I'm pretty sure they were dipped.....hence the hap hazard..
They got shinerier..? the more times the part was cleaned.

Mine (68 Karmann) was original but cracked where it mates with the shifter so I replaced it. It was pretty glossy.
