Please define "early." If you mean 1964-1967, the base tire size was 165x15, though others (185VR70-15) eventually became optional, or standard. As far as I can recall, 185x15 was not a factory-original 911 size.

Some facts may be gleaned from the May/June 2014 #23 issue of Classic Porsche Magazine, pages 80 - 85. And, of course, tire sizes are listed in the Spec Book for your car (towards the back of the book).

185R15 tires are an inch too tall for Porsches. The correct 185 is the 185/70 15 as stated.

no, no, no, as Jim said.

Would that make 185/65R15 the right height?

Without looking at a chart, my SWAG is that that size is just a wee bit short

Too small a tire. 195/65R15 would be closer to the original ratio (but still not correct for a long hood). The '65' indicates 65% of the width (195 in my case). The bone stock size would be very close to a 165/80R15. 185/70, 195/65 and 165/80 all are very close in circumference. If you have clearance , a 205/60 can also do the trick (i believe a LWB can handle these?).
