Final thread on transition from 65-66 model yr!

here are a few I collected

304069 is only 4 numbers off mine, also Irish Green 6606. Wonder if that means they painted the bodies in batches of the same color? 304020 was delivered on April 1, 1966, the same day as my car.

These two documents are critical for my restoration: they tell us what options were specified on cars that left the factory the same day. My COA is the last one, with engine 907316. The fact that mine has only 2 pair seat belts, velour floor mats and firestone phoenix tires tells me that it did NOT come from the factory with a radio, loudspeaker, antenna, front bumperettes or any of that stuff. Radio and antenna must have been added stateside, but mine would have had a block off plate in the dash to cover the hole.

Look at those engine and gearbox numbers:

304020 - 907151 - 229184
304065 - 907316 - 229641
304069 - 907294 - 229639

OK, so for two cars delivered on the same day, the engines were 143 numbers apart. For two cars four numbers apart, the engines were 22 numbers apart, and the gearboxes were two numbers apart.

Gives you a sense of how stuff was being shuffled around inside the factory. Fun!

Some interesting points about the 65 - 66 transition. First, my car was built on October 14, 1965 - a MY '66 car. My car also has a 64xx color code, still on the door and also on the CoA and Kardex (I have both):


Unless the 'C' after the color code on the Kardex denotes special order, there is no notice that this was a special order color. My guesses:

• The car was ordered in '65 and due to delays was delivered in the specced color in the MY66
• '65 colors could still be had in CY65 on MY66 cars in the earlier colors and that any non-superceded color retained the 64xx format - Togo Brown (6411) was a '65 only color, so this would make sense.

From my site, you will see two well documented MY66 cars w/ 64xx color codes, mine and this one:

There are a few others, but I am not convinced of the reliability.

Also interestingly, 62xx color codes seemed to show up a lot longer the 64xx color codes, with the last 62xx color code from my site being built on 9/8/1966.

Next item of interest is that the factory repair manual actually lists the engine number of the first car to receive Webers (907001):


Would be interesting to calculate a target VIN range for this engine. The closest car on my site to this is owned by none other than my good friend Rich Lambert (303872, 907112). I can confirm that this car never had Solexes, but will ask him for this production date from his CoA, since he didn't list it.

Just as 6206 code for silver was used up until mid 1967 MY almost all example of 64xx codes after VIN 302000 were colors not continued in the 66xx series, so 6411 certainly falls into the custom color category. A late 1965 model has the 5710 paint code.

Some interesting points about the 65 - 66 transition. First, my car was built on October 14, 1965 - a MY '66 car. My car also has a 64xx color code, still on the door and also on the CoA and Kardex (I have both):

Unless the 'C' after the color code on the Kardex denotes special order, there is no notice that this was a special order color. My guesses:

• The car was ordered in '65 and due to delays was delivered in the specced color in the MY66
• '65 colors could still be had in CY65 on MY66 cars in the earlier colors and that any non-superceded color retained the 64xx format - Togo Brown (6411) was a '65 only color, so this would make sense.

From my site, you will see two well documented MY66 cars w/ 64xx color codes, mine and this one:
301940, 901967, 6401, 7/1/1965, 1966, David "LGK6D", *RHD

There are a few others, but I am not convinced of the reliability.

Also interestingly, 62xx color codes seemed to show up a lot longer the 64xx color codes, with the last 62xx color code from my site being built on 9/8/1966.
