Fantastic Patrick. Here a bit more inspiration, 1973 Vallelunga, Folmer at the wheel:

Sure, you know where the car is. I may not be over there a lot over the next few weeks as we bought a house and will be moving soon.
...and as luck will have it, whilst cleaning up our current house for buyer inspections, my wife stumbled on a ledge and broke her ankle. So will have to re-prioritize a bit. that's just how these things work.
But check /w Jason, he'll be happy to show you around.

Hi Cees, that's just amazing to see that R6 had "MARTINI" in large and "PORSCHE" with the top and bottom line really stretched out on the hood at the Targa, whilst the '74 cars have it quite different,
and now this car (records indicate it is also R6 but at its first race of the season) has "RACING" in stead of the 'Porsche' line and in a different spot. Just shows that it was all done by hand and often changed between races.
Great picture - and thanks for sharing it!

This is R6 also at 1973 Vallelunga - its first competitive outing. I like this one as it is a shot that is not often seen - how clean and simple they looked from the rear when first being raced

That is R5 at the left with the red identification paint

On the very first page I listed the various races that R6 (0588) participated in, but in light of the Martini painting we're doing now on my replica, it may be good to add the visual progression through that 1973 season here.

Porsche announced the partnership with Martini for the 1973 season at a press conference in Paris on the 7th of March. There was at least one car on display at that event, but looking at the rear flares and the striping, I'm convinced that is not R6.
The first race R6 participated in, which for me is also the earliest picture I have seen of R6, is Vallelunga (near Rome) on the 25th of March.

    • Vallelunga (25 March 1973) - #9

    Name: A-Vallelunga.jpg

Size: 29.8 KB

It has the striping as we know it, but on the hood it has "MARTINI RACING" with the "RACING" in blue and the "MARTINI" font size is much smaller than it is later.
Also on the roof it has "MARTINI RACING" where the RACING bit is light blue and MARTINI is white.
It also races here with the front splitter, and to distinguish R6 from the other car(s), it is in bright green.

    • Monza (25 April 1973) - #81

    Name: A-Monza-3.jpg

Then in Monza it already has the "MARTINI PORSCHE" on the hood, both in white. The "Martini" text is also much larger than before.
It still sports the green splitter and it also looks like the "RACING" on the roof has changed from blue to white.
It sort of makes sense that these changes before Monza, as the car still needed to go to Sicily, where it pretty much arrived a week before the race, not leaving much time to modify things, other than the necessary.

    • Targa Florio (13 May 1973) - #8

Name: TF-porsche 911 carrera rsr n_8 muller van lennep (7).jpg
Views: 319
Size: 47.3 KB

What surprises me here is that the car sported the winglets next to the ducktail in Monza, and also during the race, but that during the 'recce' (reconnaissance drive) the day before, it didn't have them on.
there's even pictures where you see the guys manually adding them on the Saturday. Where they afraid they were not going to be allowed?
It does not have a splitter anymore, and in order to distinguish the car from the #9 (0020 - now museum car) and the #107, it has the low part of the regular RS front bumper painted orange.
    It is also the only race where i don't see "Shell" sponsoring on the front bumper, but as it had damage, not sure if that was why. {edit - had this wrongly at the Monza race}

    • Le Mans (09 June 1973) - #47

    Name: A-LeMans.jpg
Views: 324
Size: 81.7 KB

We know that a lot of changes occurred to R6 between the Targa and Le Mans, as it received the integrated rear Mary Stuart flares/tail, and it changed the standard RSR wheels for central lock black bigger wheels.
From a livery perspective I do not see a lot of change, other than that due to the bigger rear flares, the stripes had to be re-done differently.
It also sports a bigger front spoiler, with two openings left and right and room for what I think may be the 1974 RSR central oil cooler (bigger), again with a splitter, only this time all in yellow.
It is also the first time I see a (black) driver side mirror appear.

    • Zeltweg (24 June 1973) - #7

    Name: A-porsche-rsr-Zeltweg 7.jpg
Views: 323
Size: 69.0 KB

Zeltweg saw another big change, as the long tail was installed here for the first time on R6.
Not sure if it is the same that would later appear on the car when it was in the Blue/yellow Sunoco livery...
Livery wise all seems the same as at Le Mans, although obviously the rear long tail is now integrated from a Martini Livery perspective.
There's a completely new front bumper, one with what looks like an integrated splitter, although that's hard to see - maybe it is the same.

Awesome picture Hugh, I never saw that before. Thanks for sharing!! They sure wanted to advertise the Carrera RS
The other interesting thing about this picture is the reflectors on those side rear bumpers and "Shell" decals - they all disappeared during the season as they're no longer on the car during the Targa Florio.

yes it is interesting how much the graphics changed over that month or so

The SHELL decal was on the bumper at Vallelunga above

it had gone from there at the next race at Monza below but was still at the front

by the Targa it was a decal where the Bilstein Graphics were at Monza and at Vallelunga

whereas R8 had the SHELL on the bumper at both Monza and the Targa (before it was totaled)
