Any suggestions for someone who's never been before ?
Recommended hotels, package deals, etc ?
For various reasons I've not been able to go to any of the previous three but it's looking good for this one but never been to Ca before ...

Andy,
The event is bound to be quite memorable, at one of the great tracks in America ( with real elevation changes and interesting corners ) located near some of the most beautiful coastline anywhere on earth, with some of the loveliest communities on the West Coast mere minutes away........Carmel, Monterey, Pacific Grove, with Big Sur just down the road a ways. The Chamber of Commerce doesn't pay me to say this, it's the reason I choose to live here. Therefore, I really wouldn't hold out much hope for a package to suit such a trip because invariably you will find packages simply don't offer what you would be looking for in a "specific-destination" short trip like this one.
Re Hotel accommodations, I've always had very good luck and been very comfortable at:
Howard Johnson Inn
660 Dennett Street
Pacific Grove, CA 93950
Tel: 888. 862. 8086
Beautifully located, quiet, a 3 minute walk from Asilomar Beach, reasonably priced ( U.S. $99 to $ 130 per night ). It's an ex-Condominium complex with a wide range of rooms available, including multiple room suites if you want to accommodate family or share with other Porsche fanatics. ( attached photo is from their website)
I would be happy to pick you up at SFO airport on Thursday and drive down to RR IV and take you back to the airport on Sunday afternoon.........if that'll fit with your trip schedule. I would gladly show you around the area or recommend a trip schedule outline ( other than the on-track events ), since this is your first California adventure.

I guess I'll ask any of us east coast mid west guy's thinking about driving out? I'm up for it and a few locals around seem game.... thoughts?

How are the on-track events organized? I was thinking of going Saturday. Is this a qualifying day like the Historics? Or is everything just exhibition laps with groups of similar cars (917,906,907,908 or 911ST,911RSR,911R) on the track for the session, and with some drivers (Elford, Redman) going faster than others?

Whatever you do....I would suggest doing it soon, very soon. Hotels are filling up fast and the hotel owners start raising prices....cause they know what's going to happen......SOLD OUT!
