We are mere custodians and if you invest in a reasonable beast to stsrt with I reckon you'll get it back and more rather than less. That doesnt always help , but I'll send you a link to another idea.
Good luck John.

For sh*ts and giggles, what if I started with a 914/6, built S internals; could I take the windscreen off and run it like the Brit cars?

Yep, last time I looked at the rules I thought there is a good argument that you could. I also think you could chop the screen of a targa too - and pull the rear glass a la soft window. That said, I would talk to a scrutineer before buying anything.
Makes a hell of a difference. A mate took the screen off his PRB and it went something like 20 or 30 kmh quicker on the main straight at Eastern Creek.

Troy Ryan got an extra 10 kph or more down the straight of PI when he lowered the passenger seat on his Sprite!!!
Ryan is right, with the removal of screens takes plenty of wind resistance off.... however I think because the screen frame is integral to the to body, the agrument may fall over to remove it. The B's and other cars that have removed them do have a chrome attachable screen, and I think the regs say it must be 'easily removed'. Yes with a gas torch that is easily removed, but I think it is implied that it unbolts!

Leave the frame and remove the glass? Granted the frame has a very poor Cd but the reduction in projected area ought to be worth something. Removing front and rear glass would get more air to the engine too I imagine.

You really don't need to, John... since it's not clear to some of us how your sanctioning groups classify, could you post their GCR or a link?
I'm curious why you guys think a built 1.8 wouldn't be competitive against ANY Britcar of the same displacement, cut windscreen or not.
Also, why wouldn't you be allowed to run the car Ginther style? Stripping weight is easy, FG cowl cover, doors, hoods & bumpers are all available. Your running/driving 914 find can be significantly lightened, and should be good against anything under 2 liters without going nuts $$$ wise.

no fibre glass.
Also the 914 will be in the 1600-2000cc sub category. So you are giving away 200cc to start with.

Russ,
What kind of hp are people getting out of 1.7 or 1.8 914 motors these days? Internals are free but capacity is limited to a 1mm overbore, single plug and solex carbs.
