301976 is right in the transition zone. It has the 1965 dash, 1964 paint code (6405), and the ignition switch looks to be the 1966 style. Very interesting.
The late instruments are in place while the originals are being restored.

There is a current thread on the 356Registry about 5 digit paint codes. All of the 5 digit codes so far have been special order colors not otherwise listed as normal or optional paint colors.

Hi Bob,
My name is Pino... It seems you are the guy with a great knowledge of the 1965 cars... I am half way
through my 1965 sunroof/coupe restoration... I received the COA from Porsche and it says "Model Year"
1965 Porsche 911.... "Production date" 9/16/1965 Vin 302344
This is the earliest car I have ever restored.... I am facinated with this car! Learning about this car by
dismantling it and seeing first hand the suttle changes you read or hear about has been AWESOME! It has the
the fixed strut towers, the washer bottle on the right side next to the the hood strut small /less bulkier door handles,
etc......
But my paint code reads 6604 Light Ivory.... Which is a code for 1966.
The car was orange when I purchaced it last year.. She was a lifelong california car.... I am bringing her back to her original
"new" Condition... Would it be ok from time to time if I could pick you brain? Do you know anyone who restores wabasto Heaters?
I have had some helpful leads from other kind folks but I have come up short...
I look forward to hearing from you
Thank you,
Pino
The change to 66xx codes seems to take place about July 29, so about 6 weeks earlier.
I'd like to see the COA on this car.
Do a search for Webasto, there are lots of threads with many sources for parts.

Pino,
Your early car with a sunroof reminded me of this information.
In August 1964, the design work on the new Type 901 was for all practical purposes, concluded. Time was short, the new car had to get into production, and one item didn't get the green light until later in the production of the 1965 cars.
The Sun Roof
It was not available for the 1965 cars.
Here is the story from Tobias Aichele: " The sliding roof had long been on the sales department's wish list, especially since no open version of the 901 could be offered to customers. Harald Wagner, at the time the domestic sales chief, recalls that 901 project leader Wolfgang Eyb had struck the sliding roof from the development program. The efforts of the sales department did get a steel sliding roof back into the program, but not until June 1965."
So Pino, the design was given the go ahead in June your car was made in fall 1965 - you have one of the first sun roofs.

Pino what does your sunroof switch look like. is it like this one next to headlight switch
Thank you for the information.... This is my COA....

Unfortunately we've proven time and again that the COA that Porsche provides is not a definitive source of information. Those in the 356 world know that an alarming percentage of COAs are put together carelessly and contain errors, and thus misinformation. It's sad that they don't see the importance of all of the information sent out via a COA. Wouldn't it be nice if they would simply share the Kardex with us? If privacy were an issue a simple CIA-style black line would remove any personal information. Maybe someday ...

It would be nice for lots of reasons, but unfortunately it wouldn't solve the MY issue. I have 302316 and both its Kardex and a recent COA. The COA lists it as 65 just as the COA pictured above does. The Kardex has no allowance for MY designation, just completion date and delivery date.
