This car has been for sale for a while. Not always obviously so.

Owner Mark is a very knowledgable guy and has restored a number of 911 and RS / RSR. A one time Porsche Club GB early 911 register secretary back in late eighties he and I have known one another for decades; somone regarded as one of the RS "cognoscenti" in U.K. Long before the RS models became fashionable and information about them beciming available through "Carrera RS" books and www. He helped me providing information about my car from his old files and has known my car ever since I bought it. We were part of a small group of early 911 Porsche enthusiasts used to socialise every third Wednesday in the Rose of York pub, Richmond Upon Thames, long before web/DDK. Still in quite regular contact with Mark and most if the others these days.

Mark told me and my late friend, independent Porsche specialist Chris Turner, about the car while the project was still under wraps a number of years ago. Not long afterwards I went to see it. There along with Porsche Cars GB 73 test driver/ racer Nick Faure who drove M472/471 to British STP prod-sport championship success back in 73. Nick and I viewed it on garage lift as it was being worked on before big "public unveiling" of AUI1500 that Mark was planning. Took some photos that day but out of respect didn't share them so as not to not steal the thunder of all the PR that Mark was planning -- such as guest appearance at Irish Rally.

As far as I can tell -- although no secret that the car has been in a big crash -- Mark has endeavoured within the constraints of having whatever remaining usable original parts might have been available, to bring car back to what would have been a RHD M471 third series rally spec. Also he went to great lengths to reunite it with distinctive AUI1500 Northern Irish reg plate upon its return to UK from South Africa. That bureaucratic hurdle was was a big challenge but critical to car being offered for sale having an instantly recognisable visual link to those who knew AUI1500 back in the day.

There was subsequently an article in Porsche magazine that explained the way which the RS brleived to have hit a concrete wall, rolled and caught fire in Kyalami SA was found then brought back -- Phoenix-like. It was resurrected using a T shell iirc. Pictures exist of what said to be RS remains that were recovered following the crash and eventually bought / brought back to UK from South Africa according to owner. Original engine is not with car and probably long gone during time in SA. I have heard the convoluted story of the various engine changes throughout -- direct from Mark but coincidentally I also heard the engine story told from perspective of another friend who knew of it from his time living in SA.

Mark in my experience is quite open about all the challenges and things involved in "resurrecting" the car now reregistered as AUI1500 and being offered in pervious post. I expect a lot of money and time has been spent not just in physical work but on the PR around the "AUI1500 back story". The car now presented with registration AUI 1500 has certainly received quite a lot of publicity built up carefully by being showcased at rally events in Northern Ireland and curiously it even featured in a "celebrity pawnbroker" TV show here in the UK.

Will be interesting to see what the market makes of the car registered AUI 1500 that has certainly been to hell and back but had a huge amount of work gone into resurrecting it from it from what I understand were unpromising remnants plus researching its competition history and telling the AUI1500 story.

It won't appeal to everyone because there is much that is not original RS given the big Kyalami crash. Mark would be able to explain the details. Fortunately the driver survived the crash but it was a big enough a scare for him to retire from racing iirc.

I wish Mark well with the sale because he has put a lot of effort into this project. Without his dedication and expert knowledge of RS model generally, what are reportedly the remains of a late third series RHD M471 RS that one time probaly competed as registration AUI 1500 would no longer exist -- was by all accounts and from photo I've seen were apparently rescued while on the way to a S.A. crusher!

While I do know Mark socially, No affiliation. Can't personally vouch for the car. Certainly a car for prospective buyers to do due their own due diligence on, given the long complex story. Not mine nor am I any way involved with the project -- only passing on a few tidbits I've picked up mainly from owner Mark and from what I saw of it being completed on a garage lift and its other appearances at Headingham etc

Hope this context helps. If anyone is seriously interested, I'm sure Mark will be found to be very knowledgable and helpful. Also the article in magazine that tells the story over a number of pages is pretty interesting and informative.

I have to admit that between the utter obsession, endless boasts and countless evasions, there is a certain entertainment value in all of this.

Come on guys, lighten up. Some of us like to show off our cars, others don't, to each his own. We have to respect those who want privacy. I don't doubt for a minute Steve owning an RS, and his knowledge on the model is amazing, he is a great resource.
You may all recall the late Warren Hall on Pelican, one of the nicest guys and also very savvy technically. He had a 911S Targa, which we all thought would be perfect. When he died, and Mark Wilson bought it, we were surprised at how run down it was, he had been ill and had no longer maintained it. Mark did a fabulous job redoing it.
I have been called out a couple of times when I comment on an RS, as I don't own one, but I was around when these were first produced, in fact I was at the Paris show when it was introduced.
For my own reasons, I decided to upgrade my Targa to RS specs, instead of buying one. In retrospect I would have spent quite a bit less on a real RS, than converting mine, as back in the late seventies they could be had for the mid teens. Who knew they would become so valuable, too valuable to drive. Since I do like to drive mine, I have the same pleasure, with much less worry.
So lets be more tolerant, after all I have to put up with guys spending pages and pages discussing hood shock decals or the color of the wing nuts on an air filter cover, etc, etc.

    Thanks David,

Happen to find investigating the details of the RS an interesting hobby. Thought this was a forum on Early 911s. Others seem to share a similar interest and in some cases might know more and probably more obsessive on the things they track and record about the model. Others focus on literature, tools or whatever it is that lights their fire.

It is my choice to share (or not) on a forum and believe what I post is always respectful and within the groundrules and while I enjoy the fun in various forum exchanges I don't appreciate or expect to be pointedly goaded or harassed into sharing information by somone I don't even know. This is just a hobby.

If talking about the automotive companies / F1 that I've worked with and interesting people I meet from those walks of life on a car forum is considered boastful, then I apologise.

There are people here and on DDK who know me, my career and my car that I regard as good friends so certainly don't feel the need to put out information simply to satisfy others' odd whims or strange curiosity about things I consider private.

David, I just admitted to the entertainment value in all of this ;-) Anyway, it's the Internet and everything is true.

As always, David, I'm happy to elaborate or explain anything that I present on the forum.
You're welcome to call me out if I constantly make boasts for which I refuse to provide credible evidence, or boasts which have absolutely no relevance to the subject being discussed.

Witchhunt , or was it all tongue in cheek ?

I hate to see this type of thing happening. Several very knowledgeable members have left the forum completely because of comments by some members. Basically the forum has lots of good people and info. All I can suggest comes from the Latin. " Illegitimus non carborundum est " . Hopefully I will continue to see you on the forum.

I know Steve on a personal level and his knowledge is undoubted. In no way was i jumping on any bandwagon. Mine was an honest request, nothing more.
It was a tongue in cheek request, but i respect it if he wishes to keep his car out of the public eye. Let's not turn this into Pelican...!

    Hi Mike

Fresh day here and I was just mulling over exactly that. Coincidentally only yesterday out of the blue my wife asked me why I share information with strangers over the net on a Porsche board. She gets the personal friendships through Porsche in UK. Not sure why that came to her mind as hadn't mentioned these rather odd messages.

Then this (again). Not the usual sparky exchanges and oftentimes funny exchanges where people have a few little digs. Not a disagreement over some Porsche detail. Seems different, rather odd and somehow malevolent. Rather creepy.

Bottom line is I will decide what info I choose to share. Don't appreciate being goaded to put out information by someone I don't even know. Thought I share quite a lot already.

Obviously as some folks already know I haven't fabricated the fact of owning an RS or my automotive /F1 work or the people I've met and in some cases got to know from that world or just our hobby.

Think my wife has a point. A line has been crossed in my mind. Takes the fun out of it. Just a hobby.

I've a number of people I'll keep in touch with if I drop off the board - great network of RS/R owners, knowlegable enthusiasts and good folks

    Cheers

    S
