On the other hand, I happen to think that the very best stuff on this site is free --- histories + comments + details + pics that show-up exactly nowhere else . . . so if all people wanna do here is drift in + browse . . . 's fine with me

But. If someone 's coming here to sell their stuff? --- then I think it's only fair that they pay for the privilege . . . and paying the modest amount that a membership costs (+ for access to this audience) seem trivial

This. Especially the fresh-faced "sell their stuff" bunch... they aren't here to engage or contribute in any meaningful way. Not so much as a howdy do, no questions, no pics, nothin'.

We've got one new "member" that has (so far) posted 64 items for sale in a trademark jumbo-font style, most of which could be advertised elsewhere. If he ain't payin' dues, he should be.

That's certainly adding to the Craigslist vibe, and yes I search as required to cut through the clutter.

    M2C.

I thinks a lot of the issue regarding ''free loading 'for sale' non contributing posters'' was covered in the DONATIONS Thread a while back.....

but Im just a Bored old Boy awaiting my Beer and Bedtime so what would I know other than that I am a paying member.

Another idea is to require a minimum number of posts before allowing FS postings.

Those of us who live our lives at the nexus of technology, social media, and ecommerce can tell you that restricting the for sale ads to members is a decidedly bad idea - one that's been tried on forums much larger than this one with disastrous results.

Trust me, if you restrict for sale ads to members, it is members who will pay the price as a once valuable source of parts begins to wither away and the casual and part-time sellers simply move along to eBay or Pelican.

As a mod over at the 912 board, we’ve had the same debates and always come to the same conclusion, you want the parts to be available for your members.

I miss all the cool build threads more than anything. It seems guys just don't want to put their builds out there to the forum anymore.

I suspect the bar is set too high for build threads. If it's not a cool hot rod or a fastidiously correct restoration, I think some people don't think what they are doing is good enough. I know I have reservations about posting my progress here. I am planning to build a clean driver, definitely not in the same class as a lot of what is seen here.
