Beautiful car. I’m sure this will deservedly command a top price, as I believe a 72S coupe is the holy grail of 911’s and even more desirable than a RS (at least to me). A lot of attention to the details here set this restoration apart. I’m curious, however, about the floors and the undercoating. I have a 72T coupe, also originally silver and I don’t believe body color was applied over the undercoating on the floor. My car looks like the beige/gray undercoat was applied over the primer and then a low-sheen black was brushed on quickly in a manner that enabled most of it to fade away over time. This is in contrast to the wheel-wells which definitely had body color silver applied over the undercoating. I have seen conflicting information about the exterior floors so I would appreciate anyone who might be able to help shed some light on what is more correct, or if something changed mid-year. Thanks
Yes, the cars were sprayed body color in the wheel wells, trunk, engine compartment etc. Probably very little was applied under the floor pans. Then black was brushed on in the wheel wells and engine bay. Did they brush on black completely under the floor pans NO. This is well documented. I didn't get the brushes out we sprayed black over the body color. Any attempt to copy exactly what the guy did on the production line that day would be just an interpretation/copy from an original car that you wanted to copy. So, there for you'd have to have an untouched car that you were coping. But yes they did spray the cars body color after undercoat just not probably completely under the floors. Make sense?
