Well, this isn't my first rodeo, as they say. Doesn't mean I won't/haven't missed something, though.

Looking forward to see it in paint.
Pretty exciting for me. The nice car that I imagined being hidden under 2 cr@ppy coats of red paint and decades of neglect, misuse and disuse is starting to be revealed.

The original plan was to free the fender at the cowl, remove the fender to cowl seal and thoroughly paint down in both sides of the crevices, and install a new fender to cowl seal with the fenders in place, because the fenders fit so well with great gaps.

But after looking a bit more at the crevices yesterday, the painter and I both agree that the fenders need to come all the way off to clean up and properly deal with any rust that may be starting in there. Not really surprising, actually. Even SW desert cars will rust, given a chance. Just not too much or too fast.

That looks pretty good! Did you replace the large blue arrow? Is the black paint still original?

    Sort of, and no.

I actually mostly disassembled it, even to popping out the up/down arrows and the diffuser grids on the red and blue lenses. The body had been crudely painted before so I stripped it, primed and painted with Rustoleum Satin Black. The diffuser grids were painted with generic flat black. The two black knobs are original. The red one was replaced as the original looked like a small rodent had chewed on it.

Most of the blue segments were damaged or missing, including all of the large arrow. I filled those areas with Testors model paint. After 3 coats it's still not as thick as the original, but it looks pretty close.

There was someone on Pelican selling decals (blue and white) to redo the face indicators.

Good to know, but I'd rather have my original glow-in-the-dark white arrows than white decals.

Tried using Duplicolor Metalcast Smoke Anodized paint on the letters and emblem for the rear deck lid. It's not quite what I expected, despite other reports I don't really see any purple undertones there. Since my letters had faded very uneven and blotchy, I decided to use a dark silver base coat before applying numerous (10, maybe?) light color coats.

In the end, I think it's OK, even if not quite what I expected. The letters are a very dark, slightly translucent gray-black, and have a nice, smooth finish. They will look almost black on the car, but won't have the stark, harsh contrast against silver paint that pure black paint would have.

Will probably do the same with the engine grill as well. It is currently flat black.

I have found the metalcast does best look on a polished, near chrome base layer.
Try your spray on a test chrome and see the difference.

For me there is a big difference from a wire brushed part to a polished part.

I tried it on one of the letters that had faded to a uniform, bright silver similar to a Fuchs petal. Didn't like it as it left "highlights" (thin spots) on all the sharp edges of the letter. With a silver base coat it is much more uniform.

I have to say, it is easy to use and gives a nice smooth finish.
