Thread: Another 72 ST build

  1. #191
Well nearly a year has passed and no progress until last week.

Where the car had been stored some construction work was happening so the car was hidden away for much of the year

    Its out again now

I got frustrated with the lack of progress on my MFI 2.5 engine build so have purchased an engine and gearbox that are already done, has 46IDA webers fitted (main choice of ST cars) and has a close ratio 915 gearbox with LSD

All we need to do is twin plug it check it all out for inner health, find a nice clear fibreglass shroud and associated tinware and we are on the way to being on the road while I still muddle around with the originally intended engine build.

    Car looks great!!

Why do some ST's have their smugglers box lid cut in the corner like yours?

it allows the plumbing for the twin fuel pumps which were fitted in the front trunk....somewhat defying physics although pump life is said to be shortened due to the extra load

    Update time.

I have gone from having no engines to having 2 built, one 2.5 Long stroke MFI which will eventually be the final power plant and one I bought in frustration at the length of time the MFI unit was taking to pull together.

It is a running engine built with 46 IDA that needs some changes to make it look like it should...black fan shroud, fibreglass engine tin ware, twin plug etc etc etc etc but at least many of the bits will be able to be swapped across when the MFI engine is ready to go so not completely duplicating everything.

Paul Abbott has the carbies currently and if a certain English engineer would play ball I would have the Marelli twin plug distributor and the small magnesium fan shroud but I have a Mark Motshagen rebuild alternative for the fan shroud
and an EB racing twin plug distributor as the alternative for the dizzy if he doesn't play ball.

I also purchased a great replica from EB racing last week, the cartridge oil filter that replaces the STD engine oil cooler and the magnesium block off valve for the thermostat.

It's the attention to the fine details that make the difference in a recreation and this has been our mantra in this whole build and why its is taking so long too

I do feel we have rounded the last bend though and will be on the road in the not too distant future
