    NOS not durable?
Tom, I’ll wager that my new 30 year old pockets will outlast YOU!

I am confident they will outlast me.

I’ve seen many posts on the topic of repairing original pockets but no clear direction for me. I have a nice original 1972 interior and do not wish to replace. Drivers pocket is slightly out of shape and starting to break in corner. Are there any good options(shops?) that can straighten and properly repair these? I’ve seen the DIY videos with steamer. I’m not that talented or patient.

Ha.....But aren’t we saving these for the next generation?

Maybe in Arizona! A couple of years in New Orleans or Houston would be a true test. The should be made of ABS not cardboard.

    Wait..

you mean you guys actually move the movable pockets? lol

Seems like as good a thread as any... in terms of “restoring” pockets; are there replacement alu trim pieces available? That seems to be what takes the biggest beating.
At least in non-soggy, non-mold laden regions.

I bought the SM Al trim kit for the pockets. Took lots of fitting and cutting to get the contour to match the rear pockets especially at the back edge. In the end, I was less than happy with the results. My other problem is that even with the bungees as tight as possible, the passenger side pocket does not stay tight with the door handle. I will never open them once they fit right. I just want them to fit tight when closed.

Simon...Hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread.

My 73S pockets spent years in Italy, then soggy Ohio and since '88 here in northwest WY. They are not perfect but are nearly so shape wise. I did replace the trim pieces which were dented. I got the trim from Aase. But I think mine stood up in a variety of climates because they were not used. Many of the originals that are trashed were probably used as dumpsters and over stuffed and just plain abused. I just wish my front pockets were as nice as the fold outs. The driver side was used to close the door and has the ubiquitous crack in the corner, the passenger side is perfect.

I have restored my original door pockets of my 72 with great success. Used steam to straighten out warped pockets, used Shellac spray to retaining or preserve shape and form, Flock the inside liner and recovered with correct vinyl from Tony Garcia and used #0000 Steel Wool to refinish the original Aluminum trim pieces. Very happy with the results and accomplishment.
