    380MM steering wheels - THE TRUTH

    There is much confusion, deception, out and out lies, myths and misinformation about 380MM steering wheels.
    I will attempt to solve some of them.
    First of all, not all 380mm wheels are alike and most of them are not appropriate for a 911 or 912 but they will fit, sort of.
    The only true "380mm Carrera RS" wheels come from 70 and 71 914s. 914/4s and 914/6s use the same wheel in 70 and 71. 70 and 71 914/4s have a bunch of plastic on the back of the wheel to adapt it to the 914/4 steering column and turn signal switch. 914/6s use the same parts as a 911 on the back of the wheel.

    The first picture is the back side of a 72 or later 914/4 steering wheel.
    The next picture is the back side of a 70/71 914 steering wheel with the plastic junk removed.
    The next picture is of a 72 or later 914 steering wheel with the plastic removed.

    Do you notice any differences?
    They are significant!
    The splines are the same and both will fit on a 911 steering shaft. The later 914 wheel could possibly suffer if the wheel nut gets over tightened, though. Not a problem with the early 914 wheel.

    Part 2

    Now, lets examine the back side of the hub where the horn canceler goes. Notice that the surface is perfectly flat around the edge of the late 914 wheel and is raised on the 70/71 wheel. Now look what happens when you attach the horn canceler. Yes, it sticks out on the late wheel and fits perfectly on the early wheel. Also, when attaching the horn canceler to the late wheel, one must drill new holes and then countersink them. They are already there on the early wheel.

    There still seems to be some confusion and I may be just adding to that. That thread has some very good info but you have to read page after page to get it.

    The front side of 914 steering wheels. If it has a countersunk area around the splines, it is a late wheel and came from a 72 or later 914/4 no matter what the seller says! You can not hide the counter sunk area in a picture. The "good 914/4 wheels are flat on the front.

    The first version of the counter sunk wheels has sharp edges and does have a lip around where the turn signal canceler goes, much like the early 914 wheels and all 911 wheels.
    The later versions have beveled edges and are flat on the back.

    Part numbers on 914 wheels

    914 347 805 10................... Leather covered, rubber rimmed steering wheel 70/71 914/4 and 914/6 and (apparently) 73 Carrera RSs. (The best choice for 911s) These are the ones
    that are flat on the front.
    914 347 803 10................... Plastic rimmed 70/71 914/4 steering wheel (You can cover these in leather and they work just fine. Double wrap them and they are even better)
    914 347 805 11....................Leather covered 72 914/4 steering wheel (with 90 degree counter sink) Not the best choice but they do work better than the later 914/4 wheels with the
    beveled counter sink.
    914 347 804 11....................Plastic rimmed late 914/4 wheel
    914 347 809 00....................74 and later 914/4 "simulated leather" wheels. These things are junk!

    Bottom line.........................If it is flat on the front it is best and if it is beveled it will work but not great
