What is happening with the exhaust note on new cars?

I do really enjoy a good sounding exhaust....I'm working more and more from my home-office these days, and I hear things I didn't hear before!!...My backdoor is usually open and the sound from a distant on/off ramp to/from 405 reveals some pretty awful noises...Several of the new car brands have horrible sounding exhaust notes during spirited driving and "take offs"...especially the newer MOPAR-fleet, newer Camaros(sounds like racks of rattling sheet metal) and don't even mention the "shrieking trumpeting" into total distortion from the Infinitys, Maseratis and sometimes some flavor of a Ferrari sounds pretty "crappy" as well...Porsche is keeping their class with great "darker" enjoyable sound(I might however be somewhat bias)...the newer generation Shelby Mustang variety sounds "thumping"-great as in past days, and so does some Corvettes(but far from all!)...what really sounds good and goes for almost all of them are the motor-bikes (but I'm not talking HD's here!)...the roaring, blipping, popping up/downshifts are just glorious...a few days ago I recognized a familiar sound from the good old Rally-days....Plenty of induction, cam and exhaust sound all mixed into something close to a Lotus Cortina or a Ford Escort at full song...next day as well, so I started to check "his" schedule....sure enuff, the following day at the same time here it comes...I jumped the fence and ran to the back wall to catch a glimpse what sounds so good...I caught the rear hatch of it...an old beat-up Honda Civic or a little Accura something....

V6 Pony cars are the worst I'd say.

I agree, the sport bikes sound great. Ever notice how a Triumph triple sounds a lot like a 911?
