Yes, I must come clean and clear my conscious. I even took pictures.
I had to be careful not to trip over this thing on my way to bed.
I feel much better now that I have this off my chest
Ciao

My very first ever pro race (1972 Mosport Can Am) as a spectator and very first visual of any pro race car was waking up early Saturday morning (having arrive late the night before) and not even knowing what part of the track I was at. The Penske/Donohue 917-10 (#6) came flying down the chute into corner 5 at Mosport for the first lap of Saturday mornings practice session.
What a neat noise the turbo made, as he decelerated and was hard hard hard on the brakes (wisha wisha wisha), what speed as he tiptoed around the hairpin. And then he took off up the back straight and vanished in a flash.
That image is etched in my mind forever, and instantly hooked me on motor racing for life.
I was pitting for a 2.5 TransAm Alfa GTA when we were 'sharing' the weekend with the CanAm at Laguna Seca on Oct. 14/15, '72
I had (barely) enough time to check out the big cars in the pits and spectate the race on Sunday.
On Sat. Penske ordered an engine change for one of the 917-10's. When got to their pits the crew already had the engine out and the replacement in the air hanging off an A-Frame. To me (not being a Porsche guy), and most of the people I talked to, it seemed we were looking up at something SO foreign it could have been a big rectangular industrial refrigeration unit....
Even though is was the 8th race of the session, and we knew the stats, most all of us west coast guys were used to seeing big, then even BIGGER, V8's........ seeing this engine up in the air, then in the car and starting up was a real shock...
All the sceptically chat stopped for Sunday's race when the Penske Panzers started lapping the back markers on the 4th lap....![]()
Follmer won, Revson fought hard for second in the McLaren, and Donohue third, all on the same lap...
Here's a Pete Lyons photo on my wall of the start of that wonderful, reality changing race.............![]()

Those were the days! My interest in CanAm racing took a turn for the worse after the 73 season.

That front lip would probably sever a toe if you tripped on it. Yikes! What a beast!
