    Restoration of 928? Help

    A friend of mine is about to start restoring a 1986 928S, and he has asked for my help . Now, I know about 911s and 356s and about restoring cars in general, but know nothing of 928s.

    The car has fewer than 20K original miles, BUT has been sitting outside for the the last 20 years or so. It ran when parked...

    I know that form a financial point of view this makes no sense, but this is a car his wife got as an 18th birthday present and he wants to "give it to her as a present again" for her 50th birthday.

    Below are three pictures I took this morning (depressing I know).

    Is someone out there familiar with this cars, that could shed some light as to what we might be facing? I know the info I give is very limited but that is what I have for now. I am assuming the engine turns and has nothing really wrong internally. Most of the interior is in good shape except for the dash that is totally cracked. The car is in a fairly dry place and I don't expect major rusting.

    I hope to have pictures of the engine bay soon (couldn't access it today, cable was broken)

    What is the VIN of the car?
    I should be able to tell you the kind of engine\gearbox and the equipment of the car.

    At first sight, I would say it is a 1986 S2 delivered outside the USA. This is the last year for the original body 928.

    He must REALLY love her. I'm also guessing that she was being punished as a young adult. Why else would a loving parent buy their daughter a 928?

    Easy Peasy: He needs to buy a nice, complete car as a donor and transfer required components. I've seen great '85/86 928's for $7-8k. He will spend double that if he piece meals it. Not only will he have all of the necessary parts but he'll also have a template and example. THIS ALONE can be invaluable on one of these cars as they are fairly complex compared to early 911's.

    928's are horribly expensive to repair/restore. Many new parts are NLA and nice used cosmetic parts can be expensive. Unfortunately I have a bunch of NOS parts but they're probably not the bits he needs.

    I wish him the best of luck. It's vey unfortunate his wife didn't get a 911 for her 18th birthday.

    It all depends on the location of the car. In the USA, it will be really hard to find another "Euro" S2 to use as a donor car or template.

    This version is the last with the original body and with its electronic injection, ABS and 310 hp, it is really pleasant to drive.
    It is also less complex than the later S4, GT and GTS.

    928's are not so complex to work on when you know them, and regarding the cost of repairs, you have to remember the new price of this car was always between a regular 911 and a 930 (or 964 Turbo later). So you can't expect them to be cheap. But there is strong community of 928's lovers, similar to the one here on many aspects.

    Been working on these cars since they were new; I know them well. Too well.

    I'm surmising that much of the Euro car's peculiarities will not come into play on this restoration. It will be mostly cosmetics which all of that series shares, for the most part. (Although I hope water didn't get into the cylinders with the manifold off!)

    I sold the perfect car for this project last year. It was a customer's '86 U.S. spec that was painted an atrocious color but interior and mechanicals were excellent. Sold for $7k.

    And BTW: Per recollection, in 1986 the 928 was priced higher than the 930. At least in the U.S.

    Ye it is his wife, my apologies.

    I guess some teenagers do have it harder than others, that's why she got a 928 instead of a 911.

    The car is an '86 Euro delivery.

    A donor car might be a good idea.

    OK, so this is a 1986 manual S2 delivered in Spain.

    Equipment:
    M058: Impact absorbers front and rear
    M220: Locking differential
    M261: Outside mirror - plain-Passenger's side, electrically adjustable and heatable
    I319: Changed set-up of fan
    I328: Radio Blaupunkt Bremen or Symphony
    I415: Widening of the gauge on the track on the rear axle
    M462: Sekuriflex windshield
    M474: Sport shock absorbers
    I490: Hi-Fi sound system
    M494: Additional amplifier
    M533: Alarm
    I567: Windshield tinted, upper part

    L961 is Meteormetallic as noted.

    Very nice configuration for a 928 enthusiast
    33 928's were sold in Spain for that model year, 29 with a manual transmission.

    As a 1986 Euro, this car has the bigger brakes that were then used on S4's and GT's

    Is it still in Spain?

    Well, the C27 code indicates a Spain delivery but maybe it was also used for Mexico.
