pss,
I'll try, at least this is it what it used to mean a long time ago:
- A 'longblock' meant the engine is complete from valve cover to valve cover and from flywheel to crank pulley.
- A 'complete' engine usually meant all of the above plus all the induction and exhaust systems, clutch assembly, and starter.
- A 'shortblock' usually meant just the engine block (the case) with crank, rods, and pistons installed....
I'm sure others in the business with chime in.... however, that's what I'd expect... for about the last 45 years.....
Hope this helps

In my opinion, a longblock includes a distributor minus intake/exhaust as stated above, plus or minus the flywheel. It's a very good question and frequently used term without a clear definition.

Yep DT, I agree. A longblock (and of coarse a 'complete') should include a the distributor.......... I forgot the sparkenzee.......![]()

I would not expect a long block to include a distributor but some do. and would not expect an air cooled short block to include pistons and cylinders like a water pumper does. The terminology is cloudy.
