Fuchs Spare Wheel 1973

Dear all,

I just got offered a Fuchs spare wheel 2/73 (collapsible). Was it an option 1973 and do these wheels fit the 85 liter plastic tank?

Yes, only a collapsable wheel fits on the 85 liter tank.

There is some confusion about when the collapsible tire used a steel wheel or a Fuchs in 73....
There are examples of both in the owner's manual.
Since we didn't get any plastic tanks in the USA, I don't have any personal knowledge.
But all of our spares were Fuchs if there were Fuchs on the car.
I have seen both in very original 73's. I see a trend that show the light weight cars had the Fuchs.
Don't know about the rest.
It would be nice to see some original ROW S's to see if there was a pattern.

My 73 Italian S #538, 11/72, had steel space saver. Gled

My Australian E has an original steel space saver but it came with cookies originally. I believe cars with 85 litre tanks that came here in 73 that had Fuchs ( including S's) had one as the spare as well

What size is the space saver? Is it 185/70 15 or a different nomenclature

My French delivered 73S has a steel spare with the BFG space saver tire.

mine is still on its May 1973 dated wheel - but not in the car as I have replaced it with a Vredestein on a Fuchs
However the original tire is USA MADE (!!) "B F Goodrich Space Saver Spare" size 165 - 15 // 4.75 / 10.00 -15 Tubeless

other writing on it "Tread: 2 plies Rayon plus 1 ply Nylon Sidewalls 2 plies Rayon"
"Load rating B max load 1165 lbs at 32 PSI Max Press" "376 N-1" "Made in USA"

and I have no reason to doubt that this is original to the car - i know how hard it is to mount one of these (and even harder to get one off a rim without cutting it off) If there was a need for a replacement you would replace the wheel and tire - which is what i did after using a few times in the past 20 years and deciding not to push my luck with a 40 year old tire

This is your definitive answer.
The attatched pic is from the Porsche Club GB magazine of Spring 1972.
It shows a black 85L plastic tank,an unpainted Fuchs space saver and the air bottle.
I believe these were standard on the 2.4S sold in Germany on the 1972 MY and optional,as stated,on other models.
These items were not necessarily available in other markets.
What country was your wheel's car originally sold ?
