    Removal of Alternator Fan

I will be replacing the fan belt soon and want to know with the fan belt nut and pully removed, can I pull the fan off easily to clean and paint ? Or is it pressed on the alternator and difficult to remove while still on the motor.

    Thanks in advance.

Could go either way, it's not a press fit, however some take more persuading. You can thread two of the holes and use a steering wheel puller if necessary. When you get the pulley off try pulling the fan off, you'll have your answer quickly.

Scott what's up ? You gotta figure that fan has been on the alternator 44 years it's probably not going to cooperate, it's not difficult to remove the shroud strap ,tilt the fan and
housing out then remove the positive and negative cables and the idiot lite connection then remove the whole assembly.
Once off support the front of the housing and tap the rear of the fan with a suitable drift preferably wood and it will work it's way off, first time for everything..haha Bert
oh reassembly is the reverse procedure...

Like the other posters say, it can be really "stuck" (on the key and or shaft).

I didn't want to take my chances w/ the rare 250 mm fan, so my machinist made a "ring / cylinder " that supports the complete side where you would tap it and pressed the fan off. It took 1 ton of pressure.

Paint won't last long, just soda blast it and oil it down with some of that gun oil.

    Ed, Bert and David,
Okay, I spent a good 2hours removing the fan system from the motor, those 6 nuts holding that plastic air funnel was a pain in the ass. I was able to remove the system and will soda blast as David said. Can I buy a longer ground strap to buy? That was the hardest one to reach, bottom left side. With the alternator out, I'll have it rebuilt by Glen Burnie Generator Shop off route 2- Richie Hwy in Maryland for $75.

If you wanted to restore the fan and housing it is possible to remove the centre and have the parts re-chromated. We do it often, it is not so easy to re-rivet the centres but I am sure there will be people in the US that also offer that service.

In case it helps here are some we are working on today

Thanks for the photos, those fans look awesome.
As I removed the fan pully, I only had 5 shims (3 outer and 2 inner).
Does anyone have an extra shim who can mail in an envelop ?
