Plastic came first, then was superseded to metal to alleviate melting due to back fires.

In my work I have seen the grey ones appear in 1968. The metal one you have is different from those used on Webers from 1966 through 1968 which had flanges of 1.5mm thickness. All yours are at least 1968 and newer. Used on 1969 911T, 914/6 and Zenith carbs.

I'd trust Ed for sequence of plastic back to metal, grey then black plastic then metal.
