How does one going about buying something overseas?

With all the scams taking place....how do you buy expensive parts from overseas?

I know there is no 100% sure way to do this, but how do you protect yourself....if at all?

Looking at a $10k purchase, so it's not chump change.
If I can't figure out a safe way to make the purchase, obviously I won't go through with it.

Any ideas or experience out there?
    Thanks in advance.

^^ Yep. I've helped a few people out with buying big ticket items.

Are you concerned about the veracity of the item, or about moving $10k currency?

For 10K, I would be jumping on a plane and making the transaction in person.

Speaking from New Zealand pretty much every part has to be bought from 'overseas'. Best to use whatever resources are available; helpful locals, escrow services, get lots of seller info and don't be afraid to google them, use the telephone and Skype to get a 'feel' for the seller, etc etc. and don't forget to sort out a reliable shipper!

    This is exactly what happened.
I've done business with Clyde Boyer and he helped me do the deal.
    He knew the seller.
    So no worries anymore.
This closed knit community of ours really does pay dividends when it comes to buying out of country.

I'll be the proud owner of a 2.4 T MFI motor in the next month that will go into a 914-6 build I'm working on.
    Thanks all....
