68's have always been the red-headed step child. Since buyers can't be quite as picky about driver quality 911's and 66/67 cars are getting scarce, I'm thinking 68's should start closing the gap.

Please clarify your question regarding the driver quality of the 68. 68s are great cars with a pain in the ass for finding parts quality to them! Trust me, I have one.

I actually prefer 68's and have two, a 912 and a 911S. I don't feel they are worth any less because of the year.

Ahhhh the sixties... I envision myself one early Saturday morning wearing plaid shorts, black shoes with white socks smoking a cigarette heading to the hardware store to buy a bag of nails.
SWB cars are an acquired taste however once acquired theirs no turning back.
About 10 years ago the 67S was considered less desirable by many, the 72-73S was the one to have. I had a 67S and never understood why? it was kind looked down on since it was the first of the S's and many felt it had shortcomings. Now the 67S shortcoming ,the SWB, green gauges, 2.0L engine is considered desirable now and is one of the most sought after S's.
I do think the 68S cars with their very unique one year only things, Elephant hide etc. and the fact it is a SWB S and much rarer that the 67S will be "Discovered" or at least not be valued at half the 67S by Hagerty.
Definitely close the price gap.

In process od restoring my '67 911S Targa. But currently own '68 912. Parts are a bitch. Ever try to find a beige '68 interior? Wound up buying D'sser seats because the were able to press the basket weave into the appropriate beige leather. I don't think the tan and brown are any easier. Tony Garcia made me a magnificent set of door panels from the extra leather I ordered from D'esser. The difference in my opinion between the '67 and '68 is that '67 was first year for Targa (first year always worth more) and the first year for the S (same argument). Fenders, door caps and handles, window frames different. Somewhere there is a list on this registry of the '68 oddities. '68 better or worse than a '67? Who knows. Just supply and demand plus tenacity for parts searching. Restoration price absent engine are the same for a '67 912 and a '67 911. Also true of '68's.
Still sitting on my Irish Green '67 912 Targa. Thankfully that one has a black interior although beige is probably an option in '67 since no odd door panels. Just my two cents.

I've always told people that my '67 is 10% more valuable than my '68 - but I suspect time is changing that, and condition and color are becoming more important to value than '67 or '68.
Since the S was never officially imported to the US in 68 I do not believe any 68 S had an, air pump, side marker lights or the US Knobs with stupid labels.
People did special order 68S's for the US market ( start of the grey market?) and it could have the ugly US sealed beam headlights and marker lights, that is the way my 68S came to the US in 68. And it has a MPH speedo etc. from the factory. But that is a pretty rare bird, most were definitely ROW cars and did not have any US spec stuff.
