The chrome optional engine compartment light, later went to black case and standard. Don't know if it started with the Middies or not but, pretty sure standard on the SCs.

They're made by Hella and were available aftermarket as well as OEM on other marques. I've seen them used on foreign military vehicles and tractors, in different painted finishes and of course on a number of autos. There are also units that identical in the case but, internally use different style bulbs/sockets.

Anyone paying those kinds of prices for one, even new should have their heads examined.

I pose the question because it was advertised on the bird as a "356 light of some sort..." an interested buyer was convinced that it was actually early 911 & uncommon.
on a different posting by the same seller was advertised a "356 mirror". when I posted the comment "I've never seen a mirror like that on a 356" the seller simply deleted the photos.

The chrome style was available for the early 911s and I'd say it's an uncommon option on the 911. I wouldn't say the light itself is uncommon though.

Don't know about those for 356 application
