    Keeping Laguna Seca local

    Hello all,

I just received a disturbing e-mail from SCRAMP, the non-profit organization that currently runs
Laguna Seca. Seems the Monterey board of stupidvisors has been holding closed door meetings
to sell the running and concessions of the track to a NASCAR based conglomerate. I have written letters to
the stupidvisors condemning this practice. I kindly ask the Porsche community to do the same.

No dog in the fight, and I'm not a racer by any means, but I've had some business interaction with the organization currently running the show (SCRAMP) and they have consistently exhibited a level of ineptness that I've found hard to believe.

Whatever happens, I hope that LS emerges with a higher level of competent management befitting its amazing history.

Sell management to NASCAR. We need more fences and obnoxious guards.

Let's see. They fired Steve Earle. They never raised the money to finish the pit suites/garages. They jumped the gun on Rennsport Reunion V before Porsche AG was on board. Last month two international motorbike veterans were killed making a standing start -- probably because their view down-circuit was blocked by the crummy low pedestrian bridge and wrong-side flag stand at start-finish.

Not loving ISC/NA$CAR, but it can't get much worse, can it?

Every track that NASCAR has taken over has improved. Watkins Glen is far better than it was back in the Corning Glass days. Road Atlanta has been improved from the Panoz era as well. They've improved the spectator areas at Sebring and plan on leaving the 18 different forms of track pavement because it's part of the Sebring character.

You might not like NASCAR but they (and ISC) have the necessary money to improve the track. I've never been impressed with SCRAMP. The Rennsport deal was the final blow. I'm not sure who screwed up but I'm pissed at both SCRAMP and Porsche.

I just hope and pray that this does not turn into another dog fight similar to what the 356 Registry recently concluded after a number of ugly years. I don't believe that we auto enthusiasts and participants need another long drawn out, ego driven, litigation where only the lawyers win. As for me, I have always admired what SCRAMP and it's volunteers have done over the decades for auto sports and the Monterey area.

The Sebring transition went very smoothly. I'm sure there were some little issues but from the outside it was seamless. It seems that most of the effort went into making the spectator experience better.

I'm going to borrow a quote here from Mark Hicks on another forum. Mark is one of the most knowledgable people in the country when it comes to this sort of thing.

"IMSA Properties is a privately-held subsidiary of NASCAR. IMSA Properties owns/operates Road Atlanta, Sebring track lease, and the Chateau Elan hotel adjacent to Sebring. IMSA Properties operates autonomously from NASCAR. The NASCAR board gives guidance to IMSA Properties; but, I.P. has it's own executive team. By separating IMSA Properties from ISC, IMSA Properties may make unilateral decisions on governance and expeditures/investments without input from the NASCAR BoD, which must answer to shareholders. This give IMSA Properties much more freedom to do whatever they want without being subject to approval by shareholders. Another reminder of just how smart and what serious business NASCAR is. Bottom line? NASCAR does NOT own Road Atlanta and Sebring, from a corporate/legal viewpoint."

Good article. SCRAMP does not appear to be in a very good position, and I think ISC could really make Laguna Seca a world class facility. It's been in need of infrastructure upgrades for a long, long time.
