Thread: Dash speaker grill on early cars

Dash speaker grill on early cars

Anyone know if the speaker grill pattern in the center/top of the dashboard should be present on a 66 MY car that was ordered without a sound system? The car has never had a radio, speakers, or antenna installed, though someone did re-do the dash top without speaker grill holes. I have a feeling Porsche only made one dash top for all the 64-67 cars, so no matter what they would get the grill pattern of holes, but I want to make 100% sure Im not wrong here. Thanks!

Also interested in a definitive confirmation. So far everything points towards all dash tops had perforations for the speaker, but you never know with Porsche..

Based on my reading of the parts manual there was only one dash available...

http://www.darrylsgarage.com/912/912int.htm This fellow has a nice pattern for the speaker holes for your project. Mine turned out pretty good. Skeeters

Thanks for the input guys. Im going to go with my initial hunch that they all had the perforations. The car is a light ivory 66 and came with radio block off plate and no antenna or hole for antenna in fender, just for the record.

I looked through my collection. I have a very early 911 brochure (October 1964) that shows a dash without speaker holes and with no radio. Note that they retouched this to hide the "901" on the glovebox door.

Another photo in that brochure shows the very early "six pleat" seats. There's an early Car & Driver (April 1965) which tests a very early 911 (probably a 901--note the 356 window cranks) which also shows a dash without speaker holes"

But, all the later photos I have of cars without radios do show speaker holes:

    "Red 911" Brochure, March 1965:

Note that the seats have 5 pleats. Here's a photo from a more deluxe brochure dated April 1965:

The January 1967 Car & Driver tested a 911S without a radio. It had speaker holes:

I can't tell you about each and every "Program 0" 911, but unless you have an early 1964 built car, or you have evidence that your particular car came without speaker holes, I don't think you can go wrong restoring the car with speaker holes.

    Jim,
I have the same "very early brochure". Some of that image looks cartoonish with all the air brushing that went on. Much of that dash is not a real photo.

As for whether early '64 cars had speaker perforations? 300011 does.

I've never seen a production car that didn't.

That picture from the October 1964 brochure is hard to figure. I can't imagine that a "good Swabian company" would have comissioned a painting with detail like reflections in the shift knob or shadows under the instrument pointers. I can even make out screw slots in the tachometer face. I'm guessing it's a heavily retouched photo.

The photo from Car & Driver shows a real car--albeit with features suggesting it's a prototype--that had no speaker holes.

Like you, I've never seen a production car without the holes.
